No Extras In A No Budget Year

My students need 12 soft seats, 2 activity centers with a materials organizer, 30 phonics phones (in 3 boxes of ten), and 5 different kinds of pocket charts to make the Language Arts curriculum accessible and exciting to them.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 8th grade Language Arts in an economically disadvantaged suburb of Los Angeles, and I have a confession to make: I am addicted to teacher stores. Every fall, I get excited about pocket charts and phonics phones and learning centers and various organizers made of corrugated cardboard. This is a tough year, though. There's no budget. This means that I am on my own to supply my classroom with even basic materials like tape and copy paper. The financial strain of the schools is also putting financial strain on the teachers. This year, I'm working hard to create lessons that make information accessible to all students. This requires many materials that I can't buy on my own. I'm hoping Donors Choose and generous people like you will be able to help. All my requested materials will enrich my students' reading abilities. The variety of pocket charts will allow them to engage more deeply with the texts. These charts help kids organize their ideas, and they also present information in an accessible way to my students with auditory processing problems. The word web activity kit is also a pocket chart. It helps students understand word roots, and will supplement the vocabulary elements of my literature lessons. The "hear myself sound" phones allows them to practice their reading fluency. The activity centers will allow them to extend their learning with independent practice, like poetry or short story writing, and the paper center will help to organize the materials for this work. Finally, the soft seats will let them do perhaps the most important thing of all--learn how to get comfortable with a good book. Teaching Language Arts isn't just about reading a story and then testing. It requires multiple activities and approaches, which is why I'm requesting such a variety of materials. These materials are not just for one week or one unit. They will be used with every story or nonfiction text we read in class. The charts and phones and learning centers and comfortable seats will help me engage my students in the world of literature by making information available to them in a host of different ways. Donors Choose rescues me on a regular basis. My school is not in a great neighborhood. We don't have a huge PTA or wealthy families to donate to teachers. I believe strongly, though, that my classroom should look no different, have no fewer supplies or opportunities to learn than the classrooms in more affluent neighborhoods. Your donation will bring a variety of charts and tools to enhance my students' language arts education. My students are absolutely wonderful kids. Please help me give them a great year.
