Help Keep the School Newspaper in Print

My students need to print the Spring edition of the school newspaper, which they write and produce.

Are print newspapers becoming a thing of the past? Not at my school, if the students have their way. I teach seventh and eighth grade journalism at a large, urban middle school. This class is my most diverse--regular ed, gifted, special ed, and a regular United Nations of ethnic backgrounds.

Although journalism students conduct refreshment sales and sell ad space in order to print the newspaper, it is a struggle to raise enough funds to print more than two issues. The class is committed to producing a print newspaper so that every student at the school, not just those with home computers, has access to it.

This project will pay for the printing of the Spring issue of the school newspaper--which is read by 1200 plus students, more than 100 staff members, and the school community. Having an audience motivates these students, including the children who struggle to write an English essay or to come to class on time. The paper is a forum for their ideas, their research, their voices. This past year, a student took on the task of translating English articles into Spanish for the newspaper--next year, three students will take over this job. A student with disabilities wrote a personal piece about his surgery and two other students researched problems with local standardized testing. These kids are amazing!

Your support will enable the journalism class to print the third issue of the school newspaper. Your support will also tell my students that the outside world agrees--their voices matter.
