Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year, our recently opened high school school in a high-need community, has its first graduating class. Eighty of these students have opted to take the rigorous AP Literature curriculum in an attempt to prepare for college. My students have all survived 12 years of an urban education. While they often feel social pressure to underachieve in school, these 80 students all dream of being successful college students, which is how they have ended up in my AP Literature Course. Since we are a new school, we do not yet have access to as many core literature titles as necessary to help students do well on something like the AP exam, which requires a broad knowledge of literature. This year, we are approaching our preparation for the AP exam by reading a core text and also by reading in literature circles other texts that are part of the canon that deal with a key theme. In this way, we hope to expand our knowledge of a variety of texts students can use on the exam. To make this possible, we need to buy a variety of titles to allow equal opportunity and access for all of these students. While we will primarily use these books in the AP Lit class, they will be available to other teachers in other classes as well. We are requesting a set of 65 copies of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, 25 copies of Wuthering Heights, 25 copies of Last of the Mohicans. These books will serve as the reading list for this unit. You can make it possible for my students to have a chance at achieving their dreams of being college ready. With a donation to this project, you will be bringing books to students who are eager to tackle college-level materials, which will ultimately allow them a chance to be competitive for college admissions.
