I teach 25 hard working first graders in a high poverty area. I often use my own money to purchase things for the classroom to make it more warm and inviting for students. However, this is not always possible for larger purchases I wish to make.

When was the last time you sat down at the kitchen table to read a book for pleasure? As adults, we typically prefer more comfortable seating arrangements. We like to relax in a cozy armchair or even snuggle up with a good book in bed. The same holds true for young kids, perhaps even more so. If you want to hook young children into a lifelong love of reading, it needs to be pleasurable. Children need comfortable places to sit while reading. In order for students to want to learn to read and develop their reading skills, students ultimately need to view reading as fun.

Currently, students only have the option of sitting on chairs at their tables or on the hard tiled floor. We need a large circle cocoon cushion and three beanbag seats to provide alternative seating for students engaged in independent reading.

Your donation will make it possible for students to find comfortable places to read. This in turn, will allow students to see reading as pleasurable and not just a chore they do at school. It will help develop lifelong readers!
