Help us turn up (or down!) the heat in chemistry class!
I teach chemistry to high school sophomores and juniors in Arizona. Many of my students are minorities and girls and my goal is to inspire them to consider science-related careers and to move on to college.
Chemistry is a relatively new course for our students, and is considered a gateway course for college-bound students. In order for students to be successful and enjoy the course, their lab experience is KEY. Lab equipment is expensive and it's a struggle to get the equipment to perform many important experiments on a small budget.
Being able to purchase adjustable hot plates will make it possible to perform some experiments illustrating some key chemical principles to students. Hot plates are my only source of heat in the lab, as our school was built without gas lines.
Your help will enable my students to perform a wider range of experiments and several important ones which I could only describe before. You will help encourage their success and help them believe they can be "good" at science. Enhancing their lab experience and ensuring they will be well-prepared for college-level science will also improve their chances for success in college and beyond.
