The Power of Life!
The 3rd grade students and teachers of our school are "CHIRPING" with excitement as we raise chickens in our classrooms. As a part of our Science Curriculum, our students get a hands-on experience in learning about the life cycle of plants and animals.
As the popularity of this project is raising in our school community, it is becoming harder and harder for us to have access to incubators from the Purdue Extension Offices. This year, as a result of this project's popularity, we were unable to have an incubator for each class of Science in 3rd grade. Due to this situation, the students were not able to fully experience the Chicken Embryology project that we had scheduled for the fact they had to share all equipment and supplies with the other classes.
In an effort to prevent this problem in the future years, we are looking to have our own personal incubators at our school, so that each year we only have to purchase eggs from the Purdue Extension Office. With this possibility, our students would be able care and raise chickens from the very beginning of life in the egg. By experiencing the process, students are further plunged into the life cycles that happen everyday around them--plants, insects, and even themselves!! For students to have the full extent of this project, we are in need of 3 Auto-Egg Turning Incubators that hold at least 12 eggs.
The power and process of life is amazing to see in action. The looks and emotions you see on the students faces when they first see the chick developing truly has no words to describe it. The care and pride the students take raising these chicks gives them an experience they may never have again until they are out of school!
