My project needs live bessbugs with a habitat, a bessbug penny-pull kit, 4 books, 3 beetle specimens in acrylic, a class set of stopwatches, and an insect tessellation puzzle.

I am a first grade teacher at a DC public school. Our students are linguistically, ethnically, culturally and socially diverse creating a wonderfully rich background for sharing and learning. Our bessbugs (big, beautiful, docile beetles) will allow us to continue our learning about living things, while connecting to our next unit of learning: force and motion. What better way to teach force (that proverbial push and pull) than with bessbugs? I can't think of much that is more exciting for children! It's those links between units of study that really get kids excited and accelerate learning and motivation. How do I propose to use bessbugs in a unit on force and motion? Well, we'll have them pull pennies, of course! We will even race our bessbugs. Don't forget the ever-important component that measurement plays in early math and science. We'll measure distances, time our beetles (with our new stopwatches), compare them, graph the results. We may even count how much money made it over the finish line. You get the picture. And the children will be having so much fun that they'll never know how much they've learned! Actually, not true. I'll help them make those connections too. My project needs live bessbugs with a habitat, a bessbug penny-pull kit, books, 3 beetle specimen in acrylic (one with multiple insects for comparison), a class set of stopwatches, and a tessellations puzzle for developing math problem-solving skills. Your support of this project promises to engage and inspire young learners, particularly in the important areas of science and mathematics. We'll even share our beetles and pennies with the other first grade classes - impacting the learning of nearly 100 children.
