Architectural New York - What Was and What Will Be

My project needs 8-10 different art supplies, such as foam board, bristol board, and paint and glue specific to those medium.

PS 87, an elementary school on the upper westside of Manhattan, is located on one of the most beautiful and historic blocks in New York City. We like to take advantage of these brownstone buildings which were build in the 1880s. By looking at the past, students will have a better idea about space and place that we hope will shape their ideas of architecture (and of course life) in the future. To that end, students in the 2nd and 4th grade will participate in this project. Second graders will take walking tours on our historic block and then recreate the brownstones, motifs and sidewalks with a model of our block built in Bristol board, glue and paint. Fourth graders will take walking tours and create two murals. One will show the buildings of the past. The other mural will show the building that they believe will be there in the future. This will allow us to discuss preservation issues in architecture in real world terms. At PS 87 we strongly agree students cannot know where they are going unless they study and understand the past. We work closely with Landmarks West! using whatever resources they have available in a given year.
