Creating a Classroom Library from Scratch (Part 3)

My students need a high-interest classroom independent reading library featuring their favorite genres: fantasy and realistic fiction.

My Students

I am in the process of building an independent reading library for my ninth-grade classroom; I know from experience that high-interest, well-written realistic fiction and fantasy novels for young adults fly off the shelves and come back with rave reviews from even the most reluctant readers.

My students are (mostly) 9th grade boys, and a few girls, at a career and technical high school specializing in automotive trades and business.

Many, if not most of them, need to read more materials, especially high-interest texts, on their reading level in order to build stamina and progress to higher reading aptitude.

My Project

Independent reading books supplement the texts that we read as a class and provide students with choice, variety and memorable reading experiences. I am imagining bringing the many novels requested in this project into class and seeing the looks on the faces of my students as I show them the fresh new books available for them to borrow and share. Independent reading will be a requirement in my class, but it will also be an extra credit option for the more ambitious students.

Your donation to this project will reach students who love to read and students who haven't had access to enough engaging reading material to know that books that speak to them are "out there" and available.

A classroom library filled with books that a predominantly male student population wants to read is a beautiful thing: a few of my students do go to the school and public libraries on their own, but the vast majority of them do not, making a strong classroom library a vital resource.
