Unlocking the Curriculum: iPad for PreK Students with Autism

My students need an Apple iPad, protective case, keyboard, earphones with remote & mic, headphone splitter, and connection/component cables to enhance communication.

My Students

Imagine you are a non-verbal preschooler with autism and have problems communicating with others in your environment. How would you express your wants and needs? How would you develop social relationships with your non-disabled peers and adult caregivers?

My early childhood special education students have been identified as having developmental delays.

Several of my students have also been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger's Syndrome. Their disabilities impact their ability to communicate with others and to develop social relationships. They attend a public elementary school and range in age from 2-6 years old. My students are so eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning! Our Title One school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood, and 77.6% of our students are identified as economically disadvantaged. For some of our students, our school building is the only safe haven they know from the crime and domestic violence that takes place in the community. Their families struggle day to day to provide just the essentials like housing and food, and educational materials in the home are often considered a luxury.

My Project

An Apple iPad has the potential to facilitate communication with others and help unlock the curriculum. I would like to use this innovative device with my preschoolers with special needs. An iPad can be used as an alternative augmentative communication (AAC) device, but has many other functions unlike the expensive, single-function traditional and cumbersome AAC devices. Its portability will make it functional in a variety of school settings, indoors or out; the colorful case will help protect it against mishaps. With applications installed, the iPad can facilitate communication, become a book-reader, build vocabulary though repetition and reinforcement, and teach social skills through turn-taking, shared head-phone use, or use of social stories apps. With the accessories I am requesting, we can hook it up to a variety of devices such as a camera, projector, audio devices, or classroom TV. As I have researched this product, it seems the possibilities for learning are endless!

Some of the benefits to using the iPad over traditional AAC are that it is highly engaging with beautiful graphic support, and that it is a device that many non-disabled people use too.

My disabled students will stand out less as being "different" and instead look more tech-savvy. It can also be shared with their non-disabled peers. Technology can give these students a new voice, serve as a communication solution, and allow them to access the curriculum and their environment in new ways.
