My students need a variety of texts which will allow them to explore different cultures around the world.

Can you imagine traveling to six continents in just six months? My 4th grade students would love for this to happen. Unfortunately, we are confined to our classroom in Indiana. Since we are a low socio-economic school, the only way we can travel is through books.

The majority of my students have never left Indiana. Many of my students are very unfamiliar with cultures and people from around the world. Recently, we had an intern visit our classroom that was from England. The students were thrilled to learn about what her life was like back there - from the toilets, to the fast food restaurants, to the schools. Yes, they did actually ask if England had toilets like us.

In order to expose my students to more cultures and traditions, I would like to take a journey around the world through books. If awarded the money for the books, I would introduce a continent every month for six months. I've selected books that focus on different cultures from different countries. This project will greatly benefit my students because it will expose them to other cultures and traditions. I plan on creating a treasure chest for each continent's books. Once we've explored the books together for the month, they will be added to our classroom library for the students to read for the remainder of the year.

It is up to you to allow my students to see the vast world around us. Because of you, my students will be more accepting of other cultures and traditions and will hopefully embrace the differences among us.
