The Enloe High School Library is looking to rebuild it's collection of Science books available to students.
I am proud to work as a library media specialist at the William G. Enloe Magnet High School Library Media Center. We serve an academically and ethnically diverse population of approximately 2,300 students in grades 9-12. Amongst Enloe High School's clearly stated goals are for students to become effective citizens. But in order to be effective citizens, it is thought necessary for students to understand scientific concepts and processes.
To help achieve this, students are required to take science courses. Students often look for current books in the library media center for reading and research supporting class topics on subjects in the natural sciences. To help these students, it is essential for the library to have high quality, current information on these relevant topics. We would like students to find these books on our library's shelves.
Information in this core curricular areas changes constantly and the library struggles to find enough funding to keep the books on our shelves current. The approximately 1500 books on science currently owned have an average copyright date of 1983. The books are on average, old, out-of-date, and unappealing to students.
We hope to change this. And we may be able to leverage any investment in this projectfrom another grant source. One dollar invested in this grant may help provide two dollars in matching funds for this project from the North Carolina State library. All money will go to purchasing the best current books available on natural science subjects.
