FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Strange's classroom raised $728
This project is fully funded
I teach elementary art in a school that has a 74% poverty rate. Many children have never used art supplies before entering school because their families cannot afford them. Our time is limited in an elementary setting with only 40-50 minutes per week alloted for art, so I would like to start an outreach program for my students. With each lesson that I teach, I incorporate a cultural heritage link that connects the children to the projects that we do. The children love to know about famous artists and can't wait to create a similiar picture. I want to bring these artists to life for them so I always add personal details (like Monet having a blended family with eight children to care for or Van Gogh's ear story.) I would like to purchase art history books, prints and supplies to place in a bag. I would develop lesson plans for each artist's book bag. The children can take these bags home, read about the artist, look at their work and create their own masterpieces. The children would be increasing their reading skills while expressing their creativity. An added benefit to the program would be that they would be educating their parents too. This would be a great activity to share with the entire family. The materials I would need would be art history books appropriate for children, small reproductions, basic art supplies, and Zip Lock bags. This is similar to a program that we do with Guided Reading and we have a good success rate with the books being returned.
