My students are visual and kinesthetic learners. They really grasp concepts when they can see a close-up representation of their textbook. Imagine trying to visualize a round world on a flat map. The distortions are mind boggling to students that have never left their city or state. My students need six globes to help them visualize the world. My students will now be able to visualize the world through the eyes of explorers and adventurers. Imagine understanding why people believed that sailing out to sea would cause you to fall off of the world. My students will understand why Columbus mistakenly believed he was in the East Indies. The concept of using the Great Circle Route will make sense for the desire of explorers to find the Northwest Passage. Imagine the blank stares disappearing from their faces when they see the possibilities and question the world as an explorer would. The potential of my students' abilities to navigate the world is not only geared towards History. Students will be able to understand how tides flow less times towards the equator or more frequently towards the Poles. They will understand how lines of latitude determine climate and lines of longitude determine time. To think science and math included in one tool.
