Graphic novels communicate important story elements and information through layout and colorful, engaging illustrations. Graphic novels support English Language Learners by enhancing the reader's schema and providing detail and information in a visual format. This format also helps to improve visual literacy, the ability to extract information presented in graphic form, which is an essential 21st century skill. Graphic novels provide motivation for reluctant readers and English Language Learners, build critical thinking skills, and spark creativity. They engage all students, represent multiple perspectives, and help to cultivate empathy. Graphic novels can introduce students to complex literary concepts, such as symbolism in a concrete, accessible way. And we can't keep them on the shelf!
