Preschoolers need motion, adventure and the ability to engage their whole body through play and exploration. Fred Rogers once said that "play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning, but for children, play IS serious learning." Preschoolers are not built to sit still, be patient, or keep quiet all of the time. Although much of our class is spent learning through play, there are times when students need to meet as a group, wait their turn and listen to others. This can be difficult for some children and having the tools to help them focus during these times is essential. For this project, I have chosen items that will allow children the ability to continue moving while in a group setting. Not all children learn in the same way, so I have chosen several different styles of seating options and fidget toys to accommodate the various types of learners in my class. The seating options are designed to stimulate the senses and engage core muscles, which leads to better stability, balance, coordination, gross-motor skills and most importantly, the ability be more attentive in large group settings. While some students may need a seat to help them contain their movement, other students may need an object in their hands to help them focus. The fidget toys I have chosen will help students keep their fingers busy so they can remain calm and still while listening to others! Fidget toys are also great for strengthening hand muscles and building fine motor and finger dexterity, which is a HUGE part of preschool. Whatever, their need is, I am hoping these tools will do the job to help my students become successful learners.
