Teaching is a high turnover profession in which burn out rates are high. As a special education teacher of 13 years, I have learned that it is critical to dedicate time to taking care of myself so that I can then better take care of my students. This training has supported me in building my own personal wellness practice that I can utilize to self regulate even on the most challenging of teaching days. Now, when I do start to feel stressed or overwhelmed, I have a toolbox of strategies that helps me to return to a calm and regulated mindset. B4C techniques such as three collective breaths, mindful movement practices, or completing a short loving kindness meditation have helped me tremendously. No matter the situation, I am able to utilize the above strategies to reground myself in the present teaching moment which allows me to better individualize my instruction to the specific needs of each of my students. Research shows that students learn best when their teachers model social emotional well being. Thanks to the B4C training, I am now able to do this by embodying my own wellness/ self regulation practices alongside my students throughout the day. As I have prioritized my own self care, I have also noticed that I leave and return to work each day more rejuvenated and inspired to teach and work with my students and colleagues!\r\n\r\nI spend the majority of my day working with students on self regulation. We work on both recognizing how they are feeling and then using this information to advocate for/ utilize a strategy that will help them return to a calm and safe body/ get ready to learn. The Breathe for Change training has taught me numerous trauma-informed yoga and breathing practices that I have been able to teach my students to use to self regulate (i.e. return to the green zone and/ or get their \"wise owl\" brain back). After learning about and practicing these strategies with me, my students have now selected the techniques that work best for them and added these specific techniques to their \"toolbox\" of practices that they can use throughout the day. Some of the kids favorites from the B4C training include breath of joy, venus fly trap breathing (a kid inspired variation of flower breathing), bear breathing using a breathing ball, and sun dance. \r\n\r\nThe Breathe for Change training has also taught me how to implement CASEL-aligned, research-backed social-emotional learning practices within my instruction with students.The B4C SEL curriculum includes powerful social-emotional learning strategies and tools that I can implement alongside my students both during small group instruction as well as to take back to their own general education classrooms and peers. These strategies promote social emotional learning for both myself and my students by helping us to focus our minds (i.e. chime time or calm bottle!) , connect with our bodies (peaceful warrior practice) , and to recognize, accept, and regulate our emotions (weather report or feeling flow). \r\n\r\nI truly cannot express how much this training has positively impacted both my own wellness and teaching practices as well as the learning of my students. My students now have strategies they can use to recognize how they are feeling and self regulate prior to returning to class to learn and do their best work. Thank you for allowing me to participate in this training and to share these learnings with my students and school community.","fullyFundedDate":1733266572744,"projectUrl":"project/teaching-self-regulation-through-breathe/8419882/","projectTitle":"Teaching Self Regulation Through Breathe and Yoga","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roberts","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7935500_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y386&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1637513192121","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7935500"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_102488","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":436,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":6,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 3","studentTeacherRatio":"9.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"UNCLASSIFIED","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":60.5,"schoolId":102488,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Gannett Peak Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Gannett Peak Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wyoming/fremont-county-school-district-1/gannett-peak-elementary/102488"}
