After eating, they were noticeably calmer and more confident, which led to better participation and success in the lesson.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the snack stash, their faces lit up with excitement and gratitude—they felt cared for and supported, which boosted their motivation and classroom community. I was truly exciting to see all the new books arriving during our first week of school. Immediately, when I mentioned new books were available, in honesty, I received some skeptical looks from my students. However, when they investigated my shelves, I noted that many seemed surprised and excited about the titles I selected. These books were contemporary, had a more wide range of topics, and actually looked cool to them. I had a few mention that there were some books their friends had recommended or they had seen these titles on social media. \r\n\r\nWithin my first class of the day, 6 out of the 25 books I received were checked out. As an educator, it was so incredible to see kids eagerly grabbing a copy vs. just skimming the shelves and walking away. Over the years, I have seen such a rapid decline in not only reading skills but just the desire to read as well. When I talked to my students, many admitted they don't really hate reading, but they can never \"get into\" the book. So, in other words, they haven't found the right fit for them. These new books open that opportunity and give them the resources to find what they might enjoy. Even if it just reaches one student, that alone makes a difference. And you all are part of that difference now. \r\n\r\nIn the next couple weeks, I look forward to chatting with kids during their independent reading time to see how they are enjoying their selections. Some books will also be utilized in the units we are learning. For example, \"Dragon Hoops\" is a graphic novel written by an author my sophomores are currently studying. Therefore if they like the assigned text, they have another by the same author readily available. \r\n\r\nSo, thank you again.
