My 6th and 7th grade students regularly use technology to watch instructional videos, complete interactive science activities, listen to explanations, and work through assignments at their own pace. Having their own set of headphones allows students to hear the content clearly and work independently, even when other students are working on different activities nearby.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting things for my students is having the opportunity to use technology as a regular part of our science learning rather than simply as a special activity. Students are especially excited when they can choose a digital activity, video, or interactive simulation to help them understand a challenging science concept. The headphones also give students more independence because they can replay directions or explanations when they need additional support instead of feeling like they have to keep up with the whole class.\r\n\r\nI have also seen students who are easily distracted or who need a little extra support become much more engaged when they can work with technology and headphones. For some students, being able to control the volume and pace of their learning helps them feel more comfortable and confident. In the Abbotsford School District, approximately 71% of students qualify for the federal free and reduced-price meal program. So often families cannot afford to supply the school district. Often our supplies are depleted by Thanksgiving. Having enough essential supplies can make all the difference to teachers and students.
