We were genuinely excited when it arrived and couldn't wait to try out the electronic components in the classroom. The intent was to develop another way for students to showcase their work, send samples home to parents, and provide video clips of work samples for their peers. We were able to create a few short videos during science experiments and share the footage with the class, allowing the opportunity for students to revisit certain results, reflecting on the outcomes and then writing strong Claim-Evidence responses. \r\n\r\nA student with special education support in the classroom was able to participate in a science lab by being the \"camera man\" in his group. They used the tablet to record the lab work. This worked well because they could move around the group easily, catching the lab results from several different angles, and focusing the lens on group members from time to time. Participating in group work is typically challenging for this student given the social structure and collaborative expectations. The student recorded lab procedures and exploration processes then wrote up their own lab report using the video footage they took. This video footage was also used by a student who missed the opportunity to complete the lab with their group because of an absence. This was an unforeseen bonus to having the footage of the lab.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, two small groups earned the opportunity to complete an extension lab on their own while I did the lab as a full group demo. The two small groups used the doc camera and the tablet to record their work. They were incredibly motivated to make the best video possible! I think they felt like they were destined to be science influencers! One recording done with the doc camera allowed a group to record the reactions between certain solids and vinegar and iodine. Because the doc cam was positioned directly above the containers, the footage was easier for us to review and zoom in on the reactions. The doc cam also created much more stable footage on the reactions. The tablet was better for recording the participants and moving the lens around the lab work. When the footage was reviewed the groups decided it was nice to have both versions of the lab because one captured the actions of the participants and one captured the reaction of the substances. \r\n\r\nAll in all, the kids enjoyed the opportunity to use the technology and it served beneficial for my spec ed students, students who missed a lesson, and students being offered an extension assignment. We hardly scratched the surface of its capabilities! With more practice and planning, I intend to use the doc cam and tablet more during student led learning. The tablet keyboard made writing and composing documents more convenient.
