We have them set up with a standing desk, and I have been teaching the students how to use them safely and appropriately. Students are practicing using the walking pads during appropriate brain breaks and movement times, then transitioning back to their learning. It has been so fun watching them learn how to recognize when their bodies need movement and use this new resource responsibly.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building the walking pads into our classroom routines so students can use them as a tool to help with focus, movement, and learning throughout the year. My students were so excited to see all of the new materials and couldn't wait to start exploring them. We have been using the stepping stones, Velcro ball catchers, chalk, ribbons, and hopscotch to practice balance, coordination, jumping, throwing, catching, and motor planning. What may look like simple play to others is actually giving my students valuable opportunities to build skills they will use every day.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite activities has been creating our own obstacle course using the stepping stones and hopscotch. The students love deciding how they will move through the course—jumping, balancing, hopping, and following directions along the way. The Velcro ball catchers have also been a big hit! Watching students who may have struggled with catching begin to experience success has been so exciting. As an occupational therapist, my role is to help students access their learning environment and participate as independently as possible in daily school activities. These new tools are helping remove barriers that can make reading, writing, and technology use frustrating or overwhelming for some students.\r\n\r\nThe reading pens have been especially exciting for students because they allow them to independently scan and hear unfamiliar words or text read aloud. Many of my students struggle with visual tracking, reading fluency, processing written information, or sustaining attention during academic tasks. Having immediate auditory feedback through the pens has helped students stay engaged and rely less on adult support. Students are eager to use them and often light up when they realize they can problem-solve and complete tasks more independently.\r\n\r\nThe enlarged keyboard with contrast keys has also been a huge success. Students with visual impairments, visual perceptual challenges, and decreased fine motor coordination are now able to locate keys more easily and participate in computer-based assignments with less frustration. The larger print and higher contrast make navigating technology much more accessible, while the key spacing supports students who struggle with motor control and accuracy.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who are typically hesitant to participate in reading or typing activities have shown increased confidence when using these tools. One student in particular has become much more willing to independently complete classroom tasks using the reading pen, while another student who often fatigued quickly during typing tasks has shown improved speed and accuracy with the adapted keyboard.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has provided more than just equipment....it has provided opportunities for independence, participation, and confidence for students who benefit greatly from accessible tools and supports.
