We begin each small group with letter tiles for sound-by-sound mapping—students tap, build, and then \"swap a sound\" to see how ship → chip → chin changes meaning with one tile. Then we move to the sound-sorting activity where learners sort pictures/words by target sounds (initial blends this week, vowel teams next), explaining their choice out loud. This routine has been a game-changer for my English learners: the concrete tiles and clear sorts help them hear and see the patterns.\r\n\r\nTheir reactions? Pure joy. When the book-binding machine came, they asked, \"Can we make our own books today?\" We did! Each student drafted a 6–8 sentence decodable story using words they built with tiles, illustrated a favorite page, and I bound the books on the spot. The pride on their faces when they flipped through a real book with their name on the cover—unforgettable.\r\n\r\nWhat's next:\r\n\r\nFocused on long/short vowel contrasts and r-controlled vowels\r\n\r\n\"Build–Write–Read\" cycles with tiles, then publish a second round of decodable books.\r\n\r\nA class anthology of \"Word Detective\" stories (bound!) to share at family night\r\n\r\nThank you for turning practice into progress—and for helping our readers feel like authors.","fullyFundedDate":1746506012443,"projectUrl":"project/with-the-perfect-tool-we-can-read-writ/9306478/","projectTitle":"With the Perfect Tool, We Can Read, Write, and Share!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Xiong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9827659"},{"teacherId":9827659,"projectId":8922728,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation. My students were thrilled to have access to new tools that support their learning in engaging and meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nOne of my Kindergarten groups used the mystery box to explore letter names and sounds, helping them identify beginning sounds with excitement and curiosity. My struggling readers especially benefited from the reading strips, which made it easier for them to track words and build confidence in their reading skills.\r\n\r\nThe letter tiles were also a favorite among my students. Students are invited to use them after they have completed their morning tasks as a way to get their brain ready and engaged for the day. Students have also had the opportunity to use them during indoor recess when the weather does do not permit them to go outside, as well as using them for our Friday Clubs. During Friday Clubs, they are encouraged to create different structures or build different objects that could be used in everyday life. This helps to challenge their brains in ways they may not be use to. \r\n\r\nStudents were absolutely ecstatic when the materials were first presented to them and excited to see how to use all of the different resources when introduced. Both of our classes could not wait to get their hands on them. \r\n\r\nNext steps: The STEM Bins will be used in an engineering unit (coming up in April), where students will use them to discuss the strength of structures as well as how to distribute weight evenly across platforms. \r\n\r\nMrs. Jennings and I are so extremely thankful for your contribution to both of our classrooms.
