Having a classroom set means that every student now has access to the same tools, regardless of whether they are able to bring a calculator from home.\r\n\r\nStudents are using them to work with exponents, square roots, and increasingly complex expressions. Just as importantly, they are learning when and how to use a calculator as a mathematical tool—to check their reasoning, explore patterns, and tackle problems that might otherwise feel overwhelming.\r\n\r\nFor some of my students, computation can be a barrier that gets in the way of showing what they actually understand. Access to a calculator helps level the playing field. Students who may struggle with basic calculations can still engage in higher-level mathematical thinking—identifying patterns, choosing strategies, solving multi-step problems, and explaining their reasoning. The calculator supports the computation so students can focus their energy on the mathematics we are really trying to learn.\r\n\r\nThese calculators haven't replaced mathematical thinking—they've helped make more of it possible. I've already seen students who usually hesitate during math build and solve problems with their tiles.
