One group is working on summarizing the short chapters that are in Sideways Stories from the Wayside School. Summarizing is a newer skill for these students so the short chapters in this book have allowed us to really practice these multiple times in each session. They are also exposed to some new vocabulary in this text so we have been working on meanings with context clues. \r\nMy second group is reading The One and Ivan which I was surprised they had not read or watched yet. We are working on character traits vs emotions. We have character webs for the main characters so far and have had good conversations such as why we would not add sad to Ivan's poster. \r\nMy third group has been diving into Chocolate Touch. We have really been focusing more on accurate and fluent reading when we come together. For this group in particular I have been connecting it more with classroom lessons. For example, if they have been practicing applying dialogue mechanics we will stop and take a look at that within our chapter.\r\nAs for the extra soft things, my big kids have enjoyed using the pillows on their chairs. My littles however enjoy these the most during the additional tutoring time at the end of the school day. We have made that our mini library center and it definitely the most sought after center during our time together.","fullyFundedDate":1764683130752,"projectUrl":"project/ready-to-readbook-clubs/9756798/","projectTitle":"Ready to Read:Book Clubs","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bolli","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9808757"},{"teacherId":10006690,"projectId":9480494,"letterContent":"My students and I are extremely grateful for your generous donation. Your support has allowed us to transition from traditional \"paper and pencil\" lessons to a vibrant, hands-on learning environment.\r\n\r\nIn my first year teaching in a dual-language classroom, my goal was to step away from standard lectures that can often lead to student disengagement. Thanks to you, even students who previously struggled or felt discouraged are now more engaged and confident in their abilities.\r\n\r\nThe impact of your gift, specifically the math manipulatives, has made math meaningful and fun. Students are actively using them to master counting, comparing quantities, and classifying objects through tactile play.\r\n\r\nIn reading, the LED tablets were an instant hit! The \"WOW\" factor was incredible. We are using them to build CVC words in both English and Spanish, as well as practicing letter recognition and high-frequency words. The magnetic wands, chips, and letter playdough stamps have turned phonics and reading into a game. Students use them to practice blending and manipulating sounds, helping them master the left-to-right progression essential for reading.\r\n\r\nThe laminating sheets, smelly markers, and storage containers have been a lifesaver. They allow us to create high-quality learning centers that can be reused daily, keeping our classroom organized and efficient.\r\n\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students no longer just read about concepts in a book—they experience them. Students use the magnetic letters to practice spelling their spelling words and heart words. \r\nI also have the giant magnetic draw and write page on the magnetic white board room divider. Here, students practice doing math with the number of the day. They draw tally marks, make math equations, use the number line, number bond and practice identifying tens, ones and hundreds. My first graders love to take turns using the dry erase markers while using the giant magnetic draw and write page. \r\nMy students also enjoy using the big blue bean bag in the calm corner. It is cozy spot to read a book or just sit and and reflect. They will be using the blend and digraph teaching tubs to sort items that have blends and digraphs as we learn them in the second half of the school year. It's an excitement that I've never experienced as a teacher in physical education. What could've easily been a drag the set of tests is exhilarating for them because they get to better themselves. The younger kids look up to the older ones who are able to score higher numbers, and the other students encourage them to keep striving for what seems like unreachable goals.\r\n\r\nI had one student in particular, who is a little quieter, but should sincerely consider cross country and field or track when he graduates from LaCasa and head to high school. Your support has truly transformed our reading environment and opened up a new world of engagement and excitement for my students.\r\nOne of the most impactful additions to our library was Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. As soon as it hit our shelves, it quickly became one of the most popular books in the classroom. Students were instantly drawn to the detailed artwork, fast-paced storytelling, and compelling characters—especially the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse. Their journey sparked conversations not just about plot and character development, but about deeper themes like sacrifice, resilience, and the consequences of our choices.\r\n\r\nWhat was most exciting to witness was how Fullmetal Alchemist reached students who had previously struggled to connect with traditional novels. The visual storytelling provided essential context clues for readers who need extra support with comprehension. One student, who has consistently resisted reading independently, became completely immersed in Edward and Alphonse's quest. He later shared, \"This book made me feel like reading isn't too bad. I didn't want to stop reading.\" That moment, and many like it, showed me the power of accessible, high-quality graphic novels.\r\n\r\nWe've also used Fullmetal Alchemist as a springboard for class discussions about literary themes, character arcs, and even science connections (alchemy was a surprise hit during our unit on scientific inquiry in their science class!). It has created a bridge between academic learning and personal interest, which is exactly what we hope to achieve in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for supporting our classroom and for helping foster a love of reading in every type of learner.
