Having a full class set has transformed the way we read and discuss literature together. Instead of sharing worn copies or reading from PDFs, every student now holds their own book, truly engaging with the story and increasing literacy skills. This novel has opened the door for lessons on character development, point of view, and theme, while also helping students explore deeper ideas about identity, belonging, and empathy. We've used the text to practice close reading and annotation skills, connect historical context to modern social issues, and strengthen students' confidence in discussing literature out loud.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become much more interactive. Students collaborate in literature circles, debate character motivations, and write journal reflections connecting the Greasers' and Socs' struggles to their own experiences. The energy in the room is so much stronger when everyone is literally on the same pageāno one is left out or trying to catch up from memory.\r\n\r\nSome of my reluctant readers have especially connected with this book. The themes of friendship, loyalty, and resilience speak to them in a real way. One student who rarely participates shared that he had finished the book at home because he \"had to know what happened next.\" That kind of enthusiasm is what every teacher hopes to inspire. Thanks to these new novels, reading has become something our students look forward to instead of a task to complete. Your donation made that possible, and we are deeply grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1758801747600,"projectUrl":"project/the-outsiders-novel-study/9393829/","projectTitle":"The Outsiders Novel Study","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Lane","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10049251_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1749214937945","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10049251"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_39268","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":718,"numTeachers":61,"percentFrplEligible":56,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":96,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":50.7,"schoolId":39268,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Buckhannon - Upshur Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Buckhannon - Upshur Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/west-virginia/upshur-county-school-district/buckhannon-upshur-middle-school/39268"}
