With have used the sensory tent as a place for students to decompress when needed and as a playhouse. Today three of my students spent 30 minutes playing together pretending the tent was a nursery. This may not seem like a huge deal, but for students with special needs it is. They were socializing, taking turns, and building relationships with their peers. All of these are critical life skills they need to participate in society. The sensory light has been a huge help for my students with autism who seek auditory and visual stimulation. One of my students in particular was mesmerized by the light and enjoyed the sounds. We used the sensory light to help him deescalate and to provide sensory input. Through the use of the visual schedule and feelings chart my nonverbal students have been able to point to the pictures to describe what they need and feel. The use of the visual schedule has helped us establish more of a structured routine in our classroom. I have been using the CVC chart and pop-it CVC center with my students. Because these resources engage them using a multisensory approach some of my kiddos have started to segment and blend CVC words!
