I am starting with my youngest students. They will be creating texture bowls to give to their family for the holidays. \r\nThey cannot get enough of it. If given the choice they would work with clay all year long. It engages their hands, minds, and imaginations all at once. Working with clay nurtures creativity, fine motor skills, and confidence. Having multiple copies of each title has made the books much more accessible and inviting, allowing students to easily find and enjoy stories that interest them. Many were immediately drawn to the bright covers and familiar authors, and several students have already started reading through the list on their own. Starting the year with these engaging books helped spark enthusiasm for reading and encouraged students to explore new stories and genres.\r\n\r\nThese books are now a regular part of our classroom library, available for students to choose during independent reading time. Having enough copies of each title means that several students can read the same book at the same time if they choose, leading to spontaneous conversations and shared excitement about favorite moments and characters. Later in the year, students will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite OTTER nominee, which adds a fun sense of purpose to their reading. The new supply drawers, caddies, and student mailboxes helped us start the year with clear systems in place, which set a positive tone right away. Students quickly learned how to use each part of our setup—where to find pencils and glue sticks, how to return shared materials, and where to check their mailboxes for notes or finished work. Having everything organized from day one helped everyone settle into routines smoothly and made the classroom feel calm and ready for learning.\r\n\r\nWe use these organizational tools every day during our lessons and projects. The caddies keep table supplies within easy reach during writing and art time, while the drawers help us store and rotate materials for different subjects. Almost instantly, the classroom filled with the energy of shopkeepers, customers, doctors, and police officers.\r\n\r\nOne memorable moment happened at our play coffee stand. Students carefully set out cups, handed out menus, and practiced counting money as they \"served\" their friends. What looked like a simple exchange was actually math in action—children recognizing numbers, adding up totals, and making change. At another table, two children proudly dressed in doctor and police costumes, taking turns helping their friends and imagining how community helpers work together.\r\n\r\nThese resources are now a daily part of our routine. They encourage collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving while also building early academic skills. Children are practicing literacy when they write shopping lists or signs for their \"shops,\" and they are practicing social-emotional skills as they role-play, share materials, and negotiate roles.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll expand our dramatic play into new themes connected to our curriculum—like a post office, hospital, or farmer's market. One student who normally struggles with focus was so determined to earn points that he read and passed quizzes for three books in a week!
