As fellow book lovers, you know how powerful a great story can be—but in a 5th-grade classroom, it becomes even more than that. These books aren't just stories—they're doorways into self-discovery, empathy, and connection.\r\n\r\nWith Good Different, How to Find What You're Not Looking For, and The Gray, we're introducing essential skills like character analysis, theme exploration, and identifying how personal experiences shape perspectives. But even more importantly, we're creating space for big conversations about identity, mental health, difference, and justice—topics that are deeply relevant to my students' lives.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks like cozy corners, thoughtful conversations, and wide-eyed students making personal connections. We use literature circles so that every student has a voice. They take turns leading discussions, asking deep questions, and listening with curiosity.\r\n\r\nSome students, in particular, have truly come alive with these books. One student with anxiety told me they \"finally saw someone like me in a book.\" Another, who's struggled to feel understood, found strength in a character's courage.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, our stories—and our students—are growing.","fullyFundedDate":1727994136533,"projectUrl":"project/you-are-whole-seeing-yourself-in-litera/8831871/","projectTitle":"You Are Whole: Seeing Yourself in Literature","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Panter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4570262_orig.png?crop=296,296,x0,y21&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1708399863560","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4570262"},{"teacherId":9697731,"projectId":8689387,"letterContent":"I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your generous donations to the Handwriting Without Tears multisensory materials for my Transitional Kindergarten class. I'm in awe of the creativity, perseverance, and brilliance of my 5th-grade students—and so grateful to all the donors who made these passion projects possible. Your support has empowered these 10- and 11-year-olds to dream big, dive deep, and bring their ideas to life.\r\n\r\nHere's just a glimpse of what they accomplished:\r\n\r\n🎮 Engineering & Scale:\r\nA group designed and built a Tech Deck skate park, using measurement and scale to create ramps, rails, and grinding features—even a cabinet handle became part of the action!\r\n\r\n🏅 Olympics in Action:\r\nAnother team brought the Olympics to life for our class. They researched the games, created teams based on countries (with custom bracelets to match their flags), and hosted events like soda-can javelin, frisbee discus, and \"chariot\" (wheelbarrow) races. The top-scoring teams even earned candy medals!\r\n\r\n🌱 Hydroponics, Houseplants, & More:\r\n\r\nOne student learned hydroponics to grow tomatoes and banana peppers for future cooking projects.\r\nA team partnered with local businesses (Jade & Co. and Garden Sphere) to research classroom-friendly houseplants, created a care guide, and added greenery to our learning space.\r\n🧵 Crafts & Creations:\r\n\r\nStudents crocheted, sewed pillows, and explored jewelry-making and pottery.\r\nOne student made soap, using Microsoft Forms to take orders for custom colors, fragrances, and molds.\r\n🔨 Building & Innovation:\r\n\r\nA woodworking enthusiast crafted custom stamps.\r\nAnother built a pickleball court for our playground.\r\nOne even designed a tabletop football game!\r\n📖 Writing & Caring:\r\n\r\nA budding author created an original comic book.\r\nA horse lover perfected recipes for nutritious treats to share with the horses she rides weekly.\r\nThis round of projects was unlike any I've seen before—every student grew in their skills and confidence, solving challenges and going deeper into their passions.\r\n\r\n✨ What inspired me most? Watching my students persevere, collaborate, and connect with mentors and community partners. It's moments like these that remind me why I love teaching.\r\n\r\nThank you to my incredible network and donors for helping us make this magic happen.
