Because of you, my students now have access to engaging, high-interest graphic novels that have completely transformed the way they approach reading.\r\n\r\nThese new texts allow us to build core literacy skills in a format that feels welcoming and accessible. Students are practicing sequencing, character analysis, theme, and inference using visuals and text together. An approach that helps many of my struggling readers finally experience success. The graphic novels have been especially powerful for teaching students how to track plot development and identify important details, since the illustrations support their understanding every step of the way.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become something students look forward to instead of avoid. During independent reading time, you can now see students leaning over their books, discussing panels with their peers, and making connections out loud without being prompted. For many of my readers who often feel overwhelmed by traditional novels, this has been the first time they've completed a book cover-to-cover and felt proud doing it.\r\n\r\nSeveral students have stood out in particular. One student who typically refuses to read anything longer than a short passage finished his first full graphic novel and immediately asked if he could check out another. Another student with significant reading anxiety now volunteers to share what she's reading with the class because the visuals help her feel confident in her understanding before she speaks. Moments like these are happening every week, and it's entirely because you gave us the tools to make reading feel accessible and joyful.\r\n\r\nYour generosity didn't just fund books—it opened doors for students who often feel left behind in traditional literacy spaces. Thank you for believing in them, believing in our classroom, and believing that every student deserves to see themselves as a reader.","fullyFundedDate":1756387060931,"projectUrl":"project/building-confidence-through-graphic-nove/9381914/","projectTitle":"Building Confidence Through Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Land","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10044682_orig.png?crop=256,256,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1748381611040","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10044682"},{"teacherId":6744858,"projectId":9312366,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating to help provide review supplies for my students. The whiteboards are great for quick checks for understanding where students write their answers and hold them up so I can see who's getting it and who might need more help. It keeps everyone involved and makes review time more interactive.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments was during our AP Psychology unit on brain structures. Students used their whiteboards to answer scenario questions. They are also using the notecards to respond to exit tickets and use them to build individual review sets to help them prepare for the AP exam in the spring. The mix of hands-on practice and self-review really helped them take charge of their learning and feel more confident before the test.","fullyFundedDate":1746787135671,"projectUrl":"project/building-knowledge-together-tools-for-c/9312366/","projectTitle":"Building Knowledge Together: Tools for Collaborative Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Elford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6744858_orig.jpg?crop=426,426,x465,y462&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746217636831","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/kelford"},{"teacherId":9340252,"projectId":9327233,"letterContent":"Your generous donations allowed me to offer a variety of meaningful, diverse, modern novels with varied Lexile for our final literature circle. It is encouraging and so inspiring. Not alone to me, but to my students when I tell them where these books came from! Thank you for being a model to the next generation. Especially in these troubling times for education where funding is being cut, you provide light and hope that what we do still matters and is worth investing in. \r\n\r\nFor this particular project, students absolutely loved ending the year with self-selected book groups! So many students were actually excited about reading. Almost the entirety of my 170 students fully read their selected books and participated in a group presentation. Each group got to choose between the following presentations: a class lesson teaching the class a social emotional skill that was gleaned from their book, a group podcast (video or audio) inspired by a topic or relevant event in their book and lastly, a movie/television pitch envisioning their book onto the screen. We had a wide variety of presentations in each class and it was such a delight to see them set off with their creativity and lead each other with clear communication. Not only were students constantly talking about the book when they read it in class, once they got to the presentation preparation, students could participate all together and even with other groups that read the same book because each student was invested in their book. Each book that was given through this project was selected and I have multiple stories of students reporting to me that they loved their book so much. Kids even asked to take copies home because they wanted to finish it ahead of time. My multilingual students were also deeply invested and two students who speak Arabic were able to use translation audio apps to read Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and they loved it. I also had a group where one group member was so inspired, they created an entire video game to showcase to the whole class — it was creative and inspiring to see them inspired by what they read. \r\n\r\nSo, thank you for providing me the basic tools and materials to provide these types of student-driven projects in my classroom.
