Trying out our new Construction Crayolas brought oohs and aahs as we used these specially formulated crayons to decorate gingerbread houses printed on brown paper for our December calendars and made rubbings with leaves collected from our school native plant garden. They've become a tool students enjoy using daily as they color and create.\r\nThe goal with this Donors Choose project was to expand how often we engaged in artistic learning with new and unexpected media and tools. One example is our winter wonderland literacy unit. That led us to science lessons about how snowflakes are formed, continuing with art where we created paper snowflakes. Students used our new squirt bottles to \"spray\" white paint on our flakes. The students loved using the squirt bottles and seeing the results. Other teachers and staff have loved seeing what our class creates and admire our student gallery.\r\nWe're only at the halfway point of our school year and have so many more artistic experiences planned-- air dry clay, more painting, more pastels! It's been inspiring and gratifying to see students embrace their artistic endeavors and get excited whenever art is on our schedule.","fullyFundedDate":1762267620729,"projectUrl":"project/a-deep-dive-into-art-techniques-with-han/9582068/","projectTitle":"A Deep Dive into Art Techniques With Hands-on Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kessinger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9682683"},{"teacherId":9682683,"projectId":8667589,"letterContent":"Starting a new school year is always filled with a mix of emotions. For me, the start of the 24-25 school year included additional anxiety and pressure. I faced building a new kindergarten classroom from scratch with limited resources. Thanks to your support and generosity, some of those challenges were met, bringing excitement and joy to me, my students and their families.\r\n\r\nThe most popular item from our project was the set of hardwood unit blocks. My kindergartners are so thrilled with what the blocks mean to their play. It's one of the most popular play areas in our classroom. Students are endlessly creative. Sometimes the blocks are used to build zoos, barns and farms. Other times, students are working together to design and construct a ferry terminal, bridges and ramps for cars. These items allow for cooperative play among students like few other classroom materials. One student had been really thinking about the new blocks. He came up with a plan, organizing and rearranging the shelf space to maximize the number of blocks that could be played with. The multi-cultural baby dolls that are part of our project are also an important element. It's a high priority to me that the classroom materials and space reflect who my students are. Having dolls that represent my students' cultures and ethnicity play into that. I have one student who can be very impulsive. It was so amazing to see him interact and play with the babies in such a kind, gentle and empathetic way. We're able to build on that play time behavior and translate it into more positive interactions with classmates and staff in other areas. \r\nThe classroom space is considered the third teacher. In our case, adding in special seating and calming corner posters brought warmth to the standard issue public school classroom. The set of stools helps manage our learning time. We use our stools every day. They are the visual and physical cues for one of our small group spaces. Having a seating alternative helps support students, providing additional choice in their day as well. And while the calming corner posters aren't a big ticket item, they are paying dividends. Students who need a break or need to reset emotionally in the classroom, have these visuals to guide them and get them back on track. It's a great addition to our daily social emotional learning that takes place in our room. \r\nWhile we've just passed the halfway mark of the school year, I feel like we've had a successful launch into kindergarten thanks to your generosity. Because of you, we've been able to build a rich classroom environment from scratch.","fullyFundedDate":1731879316382,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-kindergarten-class-from-scrat/8667589/","projectTitle":"Building a Kindergarten Class From Scratch","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Kessinger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9682683"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36030","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":420,"numTeachers":28,"percentFrplEligible":43,"percentAsian":14,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":78.3,"schoolId":36030,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Echo Lake Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Echo Lake Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/shoreline-public-schools/echo-lake-elementary-school/36030"}
