Our building administration, kindergarten teachers, and occupational therapist duo put their heads together to see how we could transform an empty classroom space into an environment rich in opportunity. We brainstormed ideas like gross motor movement needs and how balance activities could support students. We discussed how many students lacked rich language and how a space in the room could be designed to support vocabulary acquisition. Our kindergarten language arts curriculum has a background knowledge building component which emphasizes learning new vocabulary through thematic units such as nursery rhymes, weather, farm animals and more. We chose felt sets that mirrored these unit themes so that students utilizing this space could have a chance to reenact stories from these units, while incorporating their newly learned vocabulary. We also have two sand tables where we are including tools to improve fine motor control which will help handwriting stamina.
