After I teach music, I take my students to the playground for recess where I supervise them. \r\n\r\nBefore your generous donation, there were not enough balls for our kids to play with.\r\n\r\nThere were a few playground balls to play with at recess. Most were well worn, deflated or didn't hold their shape after being inflated. And there were not enough balls for all the games that could be played. We have basketball courts, soccer field and a four-square area. My students are always asking for balls to play with at recess.\r\n\r\nThanks to your funding the purchase of new playground balls, our kids at recess are having so much fun. It is very fulfilling to see a lot of our kids choosing to pick up a ball and play. Our students are finally getting the opportunity to experience the joy and the physical exercise that play utilizing these balls provide. Please know that they are fun and engaging tools in our music class and are benefiting ALL 500 kids in our school. We brainstormed ideas like gross motor movement needs and how balance activities could support students. We discussed how many students lacked rich language and how a space in the room could be designed to support vocabulary acquisition. Our kindergarten language arts curriculum has a background knowledge building component which emphasizes learning new vocabulary through thematic units such as nursery rhymes, weather, farm animals and more. We chose felt sets that mirrored these unit themes so that students utilizing this space could have a chance to reenact stories from these units, while incorporating their newly learned vocabulary. We also have two sand tables where we are including tools to improve fine motor control which will help handwriting stamina. I have my Toni's box set up in a cubby desk with my light table and the students are able to listen to a story while using the light table. The Tonies I chose coordinate with our Knowledge units with our fairy tales unit. \r\n\r\nThe students are using the shake and add numbers and the tracing number tool during our math center time.
