The best part is that it's full of math and strategy and a fair bit of luck to make things a little more interesting. \r\n\r\nThis new routine adds yet another way to engage my students in mathematical thinking. These texts have opened up important conversations about feelings, empathy, and relationships, helping students connect to themselves and others in meaningful ways. Each story introduces key skills such as recognizing and naming emotions, practicing empathy, managing conflict, and fostering cooperation—skills that are crucial for building a positive and inclusive classroom community.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading isn't just about the words on the page; it's an interactive experience. After reading, we often discuss the emotions and actions of the characters, relating them to our own experiences. This gives students the chance to practice problem-solving, sharing their thoughts and feelings, and listening to the perspectives of others. These discussions provide valuable opportunities for students to build communication and emotional regulation skills.\r\n\r\nSome students have especially benefited from these books. For instance, one student who has struggled with understanding and naming their emotions has shown incredible progress since we started reading books focused on emotional awareness. Another student, who is naturally empathetic, is using the stories to help their classmates work through small conflicts, applying the lessons of kindness and cooperation from the texts to real-life situations. It's heartwarming to see students excitedly suggest books during center time or eagerly discuss how they can practice the lessons learned from our reading in their daily lives.\r\n\r\nThanks to these resources, my students are growing more confident in their ability to express themselves, navigate friendships, and understand the perspectives of others. These new books have become an essential part of our classroom, and I'm excited to see how they continue to shape the social-emotional growth of my students.","fullyFundedDate":1727990160124,"projectUrl":"project/storytime-for-the-soul-enhancing-socia/8802518/","projectTitle":"\"Storytime for the Soul: Enhancing Social-Emotional Learning\"","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Powers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9207072_orig.jpg?crop=320,320,x0,y23&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1726714923071","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9207072"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_36691","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":373,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":5,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":60,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":17,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":88.0,"schoolId":36691,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Roosevelt Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Roosevelt Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/olympia-school-district-111/roosevelt-elementary-school/36691"}
