A European blackberry root looks like a small tree stump and can be three-five feet in length. Clearing that fence, cleaning new garden beds, planting food from seed and watching it grow into food - these experiences change lives for our students. Some of them don't have safe places at home to be outside in the fresh air. The garden is their safe space. Some don't have access to fresh fruits and vegetables at home, never mind fresh flowers. Our garden produces all of these things. Some students experience food insecurity. Now they know how to grow food AND are growing food right in the school garden that is used to feed our community.\r\n\r\nOur success last year, and continued success this year, in maintaining our community garden is all thanks to your generous donations of seeds and garden tools. These updated tools allowed us to:\r\n\r\n~*~ Clear our front fence of vines and roots, allowing us to begin building a path that will circle the entire garden!\r\n~*~ Plant new garden beds, including a sunflower bed, a garlic bed, and a variety of new flowers\r\n~*~ Clear five garden beds for replanting, which are now producing tomatoes, tomatillos, squash, carrots, and more!\r\n~*~ Prune and strengthen our raspberry farm, which continued to produce into September because it was so healthy.\r\n\r\nOur garden remains completely organic and community-driven, but it's our students that are leading that passionate effort. Last year's fourth graders are now in fifth grade, and are going to beginning mentoring this year's fourth grade students in specific care and curation of every area of the garden. The skills they built and will pass on will keep our beautiful and precious space alive and thriving.\r\n\r\nAgain, I can't express my deep gratitude strongly enough for the impact you made in bringing this project to fruition. We are so fortunate to have more than 1 acre of land to use as a garden space at our school. This area provides the perfect spot for learning science and math. It is also used by many for a quiet reading or art spot. Its favorite use is for growing food/flowers and just plain frolicking in the outdoors. \r\n\r\nDuring spring and fall our garden grows at a frenzied pace! Prior to this donation, we had an old beast of a gas mower donated by a family. Having to buy gas and the functioning of the gas mower prohibited being able to keep the pathways clear. Teachers could not bring students out to the space because it was continually overgrowing and the excess grass and weeds held on to moisture that soaked student's shoes and pants. \r\n\r\nWe are so thankful for the ability to now keep the pathways clear with a lawnmower that does not rely on gas and that actually cuts down anything in our pathways.
