Instead of hoping we picked the right materials the first time, we have the privilege of selecting more, vetting them professionally ourselves, and walking away with the highest quality resources available through TPT.\r\n\r\nWhat gift to have the freedom to select the very best for our students and be able to use these materials in the years to come. You're bringing financial literacy, agency, responsibility, and empowerment to students who are predominantly underrepresented, disproportionately at a disadvantage in the job market, and yet who have the creativity, drive, and desire to see dreams realized as much as anyone. Building financial literacy and autonomy in a safe space, where systems are consistent and expectations clear, gives my students of this school year and many to come the chance to learn through experience, set and see goals achieved. In our classroom community, they can try, fail, make mistakes, regrow, and succeed, and recognize the real-world implications of being educated and confident with money. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, of course, our learning standards in math and social studies will be addressed and used daily as part of our new system. Applied math, or math used in real-world scenarios, gives context to the skills we build in fourth grade and why we learn them. How do we use addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and decimals in our daily lives as we grow? How do we keep track of our bills and make sure they're paid before we run up a shopping tab on a credit card? What does it take to apply for and get a job, and why does knowing decimals matter?\r\n\r\nAdditionally, economics are part of social studies. I can already picture our students' excitement when these wonderful new treasures arrive and make their way onto our shelves!\r\n\r\nEach of these books has a special purpose in our library, and I wanted to share why I chose them.\r\n\r\nThe Kingdom of Wrenly is a new book in a very popular series, and I already have many young readers waiting patiently for this newest adventure. It is always so exciting when students recognize a new title in a series they love and can't wait to get their hands on it!\r\n\r\nThe Witchlings series is especially meaningful to me because its Hispanic author is one we have been learning about during Hispanic Heritage Month. I promised our students that I would bring this series into our library, and I am so happy that I can keep that promise. I love being able to introduce children to authors from different backgrounds and show them that their stories and voices belong on our library shelves.\r\n\r\nDream Catcher is a 2025 Pura Belpré Award winner, and our students have also been learning about this important award. We have many Hispanic students at our school, and it is important to me that they see their culture, heritage, and experiences celebrated in our library. At the same time, these books give all of our students an opportunity to discover Hispanic authors and learn about the wonderful contributions they have made to children's literature.\r\n\r\nThis is what makes being a school librarian so special to me. A book can be so much more than a book. It can be a mirror where a child sees themselves, a window into someone else's world, or an invitation to discover something completely new.\r\n\r\nI truly could not do the work I do without the incredibly generous hearts of donors like you. You are helping me build a library filled with books, joy, discovery, representation, and opportunities for our students. I know our beginning readers are going to love these books and will be so excited to discover a new series they can read independently.\r\n\r\nI also added Lily-May's Joyful Day, a wonderful social-emotional learning picture book about mindfulness, kindness, friendship, and finding joy in everyday moments. I plan to incorporate it into our Character Strong lessons throughout the year. The book was written by John Schu, a well-known children's author and former school librarian, which makes it an especially meaningful addition to our library collection.\r\n\r\nAnd the titanium scissors are such a treat! I've heard they are wonderful for library book processing because they are durable and don't get sticky when cutting through tape. We do so much processing in the library, so I'm excited to put these to work!\r\n\r\nThe older-student materials will be used for another new library center I'm creating, with fun choices such as Sudoku, mini library activities, seasonal word searches, and other surprises for students to enjoy. As we completed last year's student gardeners program and began this years, we're already seeing the impact of students having access to gloves, spades, clippers, hoes, rakes, and more that you so generously donated to our classroom community! The work we do in our community garden is helping us grow food and beautiful plants, in addition to growing students who are project leaders, conservationists, food cultivators, and healthy, active humans who love the outdoors!\r\n\r\nAs you will see in the photos shared, students worked very hard with these tools as soon as they arrived. We cleaned an entire fence covered in blackberry and other invasive plants that had been building up for years. Students also used the tools provided to begin work on a long-dream-of path around the entire garden perimeter, allowing more access to every part of the garden so that we can continue to transform it. Students also worked on constructing brand new beds, including tomatoes, tomatillos, sunflowers, and squash. Our fourth graders last year are now fifth graders and eager to become mentors to the fourth graders who are just now entering the garden to become leaders themselves!\r\n\r\nThe joy that our community garden brings our students, as well as the larger community of families we serve, is impossible to describe, though hopefully you'll be able to catch a glimpses in the photos. The tools you brought to us will allow us to build our garden program, create more student leaders, and feed our local community.
