With the SEL materials, structured lessons, and calming tools funded through this project, my students now have daily opportunities to build essential skills such as self‑regulation, empathy, communication, and perseverance.\r\n1. Improved Emotional Regulation\r\nStudents have become more aware of their emotions and are better able to express how they feel. Using the SEL tools provided—such as emotion charts, calming corners, and mindfulness activities—students independently use strategies to calm down before conflicts escalate. This has led to fewer interruptions during learning time and a more peaceful classroom atmosphere.\r\n2. Stronger Relationships and Classroom Community\r\nSEL activities and shared discussions have helped students develop trust with one another. They listen more respectfully, use kinder language, and support peers during challenges. The class now functions more like a community, where students feel safe to take risks and ask for help.\r\n3. Increased Engagement and Confidence\r\nWith their emotional needs supported, students are more confident participating in academic tasks. Many students who were previously reluctant now raise their hands, work collaboratively, and share ideas. SEL routines have also provided structure for students who benefit from predictable, supportive interactions.\r\n4. Reduction in Behavioral Challenges\r\nBehavioral incidents have noticeably decreased. Students use conflict‑resolution techniques, breathing strategies, and communication prompts from the project resources. This has resulted in smoother transitions, fewer outbursts, and more productive learning time.\r\n5. Better Support for English Learners\r\nAs an EL Resource Teacher, supporting language development through SEL has been especially powerful. Students are practicing expressive language while learning to name their emotions, explain their thinking, and engage in peer discussions. SEL has helped remove barriers, allowing English learners to build confidence and connect emotionally in the classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1768257202912,"projectUrl":"project/social-emotional-learning-focus/9717373/","projectTitle":"Social-Emotional Learning Focus","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Leonard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9507687"},{"teacherId":9507687,"projectId":9830538,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of my project, \"Stories that shape hearts\" Your contribution will directly impact students by helping create a learning environment that strengthens their social‑emotional skills, builds resilience, and fosters a sense of belonging.\r\n\r\nBecause of your funding, I am able to provide meaningful resources and experiences that help students grow not only academically, but also as confident, compassionate individuals. It is because of people like you that children are able to foster a life-long love of reading. You are awesome.\r\n\r\nMy students can't wait for the new award nominees to be announced every year. I read these new transitional chapter books to my 2nd and 3rd grade students. The great thing about the books that are chosen is that they are many times the first book in a series. After we read the first book together, they are asking for the other books in the series.
