We read The Giver this Fall and it was everything I imagined it would be- it was funny and sweet, students connected to it and learned to ask good questions, and it's really been the best warm up for our school year. The community here is exceptional- students are working together and learning how to treat each other and lift each other up in the academic setting. We've used it as a vehicle for discussing language and register and kids will write their first essay using this as a springboard. \r\nAll students used The Giver as a support for language acquisition, vocabulary and grammar (look at this sentence here! It has two verbs! What is this type of word? What is a two-word sentence called?) and for sharing about their lives and preferences (where would you like to travel? Would you like to travel on bike like Jonas?) and have used it to support narrative writing as well.\r\nBecause we could afford 35 copies, we were able to give a copy to the student support center so students with special education accommodations could read it with a supportive adult who could help them track the most important parts. I was also able to lend one to each of the SPED case managers, and the structured studies teacher, to bring them into the world of the Giver and help them be on the team supporting our students in all the places they receive support in our school. Thank you again so much- this was a great experience, and we couldn't have had it without you.","fullyFundedDate":1757364383083,"projectUrl":"project/the-gift-of-the-giver-all-class-novel/9278666/","projectTitle":"The Gift of the Giver: All Class Novel","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Chrisman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9184052"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_35839","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":831,"numTeachers":54,"percentFrplEligible":19,"percentAsian":24,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":50,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":40.0,"schoolId":35839,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Maywood Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Maywood Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/issaquah-school-district-411/maywood-middle-school/35839"}
