My students are deeply committed to raising salmon and learning first-hand how to care for fish in a hatchery setting located away from our school's main campus. Their work requires responsibility, patience, teamwork, and technical skill, yet much of that work often goes unseen by their peers. Thanks to your generosity, we are now able to bring a piece of that experience directly onto our main campus through a salmon egg aquarium display.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the aquarium setup, they were excited to know that others would finally be able to witness and better understand the work they do behind the scenes. Many of my students took pride in helping set up the tank, explaining the equipment to others, and sharing why maintaining proper water quality and temperature is critical for salmon survival. Students and staff from other programs have already begun stopping by to observe the eggs and ask questions about the salmon lifecycle, hatchery operations, and conservation efforts in the Puget Sound region. It has created meaningful conversations and opportunities for my students to step into leadership and educator roles within our school community.\r\n\r\nThe aquarium, chiller, filter, and gravel have all played an essential role in creating a safe and sustainable environment for the salmon eggs. The chiller keeps the water at the cold temperatures salmon need to survive, while the filtration system helps maintain healthy water conditions. The gravel provides a natural environment that mimics the riverbeds where salmon develop in the wild. Together, these resources allow students to apply the same hatchery practices they use in our off-campus facility while making the learning visible and accessible to others.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, students will continue monitoring water quality, observing salmon development, and documenting growth as part of their ongoing hatchery and aquaculture studies. We also plan to use the aquarium as an educational tool during school events and classroom visits so more students can learn about salmon conservation and the importance of protecting local ecosystems.
