As we handed out the journals, you could see their excitement grow—they immediately started flipping through the blank pages, imagining what they might fill them with. During our first journaling session, some students sketched the coastline they'd explored that day, while others carefully glued in ticket stubs, pressed flowers, or wrappers from snacks they'd never tasted before. It was heartwarming to see even the more reserved students engrossed in capturing their experiences in words and images.\r\n\r\nEach evening, we set aside time for everyone to write about the day's adventures—whether that meant describing the feeling of standing near a geothermal spring, recalling the Māori cultural performance we attended, or reflecting on the teamwork it took to complete a science challenge. This quiet, reflective time has become a meaningful ritual. Students have shared that journaling has helped them process not only what they learned about science and culture but also what they discovered about themselves. One student told me she never realized how brave she could be until she wrote about hiking up a steep trail she had been nervous to try.\r\n\r\nAfter we wrap up our trip we invited students to share a favorite journal entry or page with the group. This will be a chance to celebrate their growth and the memories they've collected. When we returned home, their Wander Journals were much more than souvenirs—they were tangible reminders of how far they traveled, both literally and personally. It's my hope that years from now, they'll open these journals and vividly relive the wonder, learning, and connections they made on this unforgettable STEM journey.","fullyFundedDate":1701178571824,"projectUrl":"project/wander-journals/7927407/","projectTitle":"Wander Journals","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5549299_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538952909933","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jmr"},{"teacherId":5549299,"projectId":7139422,"letterContent":"When my students first saw all the new fitness equipment, their faces absolutely lit up. Many of them had never played badminton or used real fitness cards before, so there was a lot of excitement and curiosity. We started by unpacking everything together, and immediately students began organizing the materials and brainstorming what games and activities we could try first. One moment that stood out was when a group of students set up an impromptu badminton match in our multipurpose room. Even students who are usually shy about participating joined in, laughing and cheering each other on.\r\n\r\nSince then, we've been using the resources almost every day during our fitness club sessions. The outdoor basketballs have made it easy to organize games that build both hooping skills and confidence. The Ultra Star Sport Disc has been a hit too—students love challenging each other to see who can make the longest throw or most accurate catch. The Bodyweight Exercise Cards have been a great way to turn workouts into friendly competitions, and they're helping students learn new exercises in a way that feels like play rather than a chore.\r\n\r\nNext, we plan to start a \"Fitness Challenge Week,\" where students will rotate through stations using all the equipment to practice different skills—shooting hoops, playing badminton, disc throwing, and completing exercise card challenges. Each student will set a personal goal for the week, and we'll celebrate their progress together. Thanks to these supplies, our fitness club has become a place where students feel energized, included, and excited to move their bodies.","fullyFundedDate":1675359766945,"projectUrl":"project/lets-get-fit/7139422/","projectTitle":"Let's Get Fit!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rodriguez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5549299_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1538952909933","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jmr"},{"teacherId":9527451,"projectId":8371369,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating to my graphic novel library. My students are really enjoying acquiring more Spanish through the comic style scripts and visuals. They have really helped my resistant readers feel more comfortable during our daily reading time. Moreover, I have noticed my heritage speakers gravitating towards the higher level graphic novels rather than sticking with the easier novels they had chosen before. You would be amazed how much language kids can acquire from sentence context and pictures that support the text. Thanks again for making reading more enjoyable and accessible for all kids!","fullyFundedDate":1715359621266,"projectUrl":"project/ay-caray-bim-bam-lee-novelas-graficas/8371369/","projectTitle":"Ay Caray! We are at the most exciting phase now, where students are designing their own independent projects to show that they understand how circuits work in a creative application of their own choosing. \r\n\r\nOne of the things I have encountered over and over again in my career as a public school teacher is getting to a point with an idea, project, or curriculum, where you think, \"Oh, it would be cool if we could do that project, but we don't have the materials\". Thanks to your generous donation, we were able to take our circuits unit from something that was very basic and qualitative to something much more ambitious. Students are now able to measure the behavior of their circuits and make connections to other physical indicators. We have the supplies to explore a much broader range of circuit types than just lighting up lightbulbs. We have the kits that allow students who are tentative about free exploration to get started and then gain independence as they go. \r\n\r\nStudent projects range from functional to decorative, practical to pure fun. One group is designing a toy boat that they will 3D print and then install a functional propeller system in, powered by a circuit and complete with LEDs that indicate the circuit status. Another group is crafting intricate flowers that will have LEDs as the centerpiece. Still others are creating toy vehicles, art installations, and sculptures. It is so fun to watch and would not be possible without your donation.","fullyFundedDate":1729528727945,"projectUrl":"project/scientists-start-your-engines/8873537/","projectTitle":"Scientists, Start Your Engines!","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Rosalind","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-echols"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_131489","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":122,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":36,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":20,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 10","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.0,"schoolId":131489,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Maritime High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Maritime High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/highline-public-schools/maritime-high-school/131489"}
