Students are excited to print diagrams and practice problems (which they call \"stickers\") that help them visualize concepts and better organize their interactive notebooks. This small addition has sparked a big increase in engagement, creativity, and ownership of their learning.\r\n\r\nYour gift also allowed us to add cardstock tabs and other organizational materials that help students build notebooks they're truly proud of. All of the students in my classes are students who are re-taking math this year because the failed it last year. The traditional paper and pencil routine didn't work for them. Now, they practice problems on the whiteboards. I can see what they are doing, quickly identify if they need help and they can assess each others work for ideas and strategies. Their success this semester is evidence of their impact as almost all of my students are not just passing, but passing with A's and B's. \r\n\r\nWhen they first saw the whiteboards, they all wanted to draw on them. Everyone likes drawing on new whiteboards. When told them they were for them, they didn't believe me, but you could see the curiosity blooming behind their eyes. Now they are excited to come and do math each day (even if they don't \"like\" math). \r\n\r\nNext steps for my classroom are to incorporate more challenging problems for them to work through with a partner and looking for other strategies for promoting mathematical thinking while using these boards. \r\n\r\nThank you again for funding this project!","fullyFundedDate":1756387052079,"projectUrl":"project/build-a-thinking-classroom/9554176/","projectTitle":"Build a Thinking Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Franko","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9745149"},{"teacherId":3618461,"projectId":9060303,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping my classroom experience new calculators. With our school moving to a no cell phone policy it has been extremely helpful having calculators on hand that students can use. \r\nSome comments from students were how fancy or nice the calculators felt. With these reflective bands and tags, we're hoping it will increase the visibility of our walkers, so drivers can spot them right away, and families can feel reassured that their children are better protected.\r\n\r\nFor our students, these items are more than just gear—they are peace of mind. They mean that a 9th grader walking their younger sibling to school can focus on making it on time instead of worrying about traffic. They mean that a student who loves walking home with friends doesn't have to fear going unnoticed by cars. They mean safety, independence, and confidence on their daily journey.\r\n\r\nYour support shows our kids that their community values them and cares about their well-being, not just inside the classroom but on the way there, too. I know there are many projects out there, but this one was so incredibly meaningful for our students and school. \r\n\r\nThese pocket talks have been invaluable in the math classroom. With many refugee students entering our school speaking almost no English, these translators have allowed our students to access the curriculum at a level of rigor appropriate for them. Often times, language barriers in schools prevent non-English speakers to reach their full academic potential and often makes them feel isolated and alone. These translators have helped students show the amazing math they are capable of as well as build relationships with their peers and teachers. Some have even become leaders and helpers in the classroom (something that wouldn't have been possible with out the translators). After the hardships they have endured to get here, it is incredibly heartwarming to see them thrive academically as well as make friends and build a community of support. \r\n\r\nIn addition to the classroom use, the pocket talks have also be instrumental in increasing safety instruction. With so many languages, it has been hard to communicate safety drills with our students, especially during an actual emergency. These pocket talks have improved our safety awareness and protocol procedures for our non-English speaking students. They and the school are safer because of it. \r\n\r\nI and my students can't thank you enough for choosing us. Thanks to your support, we have been able to purchase the folding tables and sound system that are now transforming how we host gatherings and events at Washington High School. \r\nAs we shared, our students are the heartbeat of our community, and this year, our school is navigating significant budget cuts and reduced staff. Despite these challenges, we remain dedicated to fostering an environment where students from all walks of life can come together to learn, grow, and support each other. Your donation has helped strengthen that mission.\r\n\r\nWith the new equipment, we've already hosted a Family Check & Connect Night, bingo for students during Fall Fest and used the speaker to play music while our ASL students signed holiday songs around campus. For instance, during the Family Check & Connect Night, the folding tables allowed us to better display resources and organize information, making it easier for students and families to engage. The sound system was a game-changer during student bingo, allowing everyone to hear announcements clearly, making the event more inclusive and enjoyable for all.\r\n\r\nBy investing in our school community, your support has gone beyond funding an event or \"just\" items; it has made a lasting impact on our students' sense of belonging and connection.
