The new students have been actually enjoying the new timecard system!!!\r\n\r\nThe goal was to train some ownership, some accountability in having to account for showing up on time. The difference between last year without this and this year with it is astounding. \r\n\r\nIt didn't take long for students to get into a great routine and start owning their schedule. It was tough to train this without the timecards honestly. It's a physical system they have to own up to. If they miss clocking in, they have to come to me and explain why. They also need to explain to their folks if something doesn't add up. \r\n\r\nI have to say, this might have enhanced learning to a new level in my class!!! I couldn't wait to come home and play a game of chess everyday. When I got into middle school, I found out they had a chess club that my science teacher put together. I am so grateful for that man because he got me into playing tournaments, playing at coffee shops with where my game would grow. \r\n\r\nWhen I joined my high school team, they had two of the best players in the state that elevated my game like nobody before. What they also created was a culture of competitiveness and inclusivity like I hadn't seen. Spending my lunch breaks playing bughouse chess, studying the Caro-Kann opening out of a book, spending evenings at the Last Exit coffee house playing speed chess, and going to tournaments on the weekends. It was the greatest experience of my school experience. We would go on to win 3 state championships!\r\n\r\nWhat my long winded paragraphs are trying to say is that with your support of this new chess program, I hope to give students a similar experience. My passion for chess will be directed at creating a culture where students can be diverse and competitive. I have big plans to create something special and with your help, I have the tools to do so. \r\n\r\nI simply cannot thank you enough for giving to this project. Students will receive a certificate of completion of year one of the program and also this Tape Measure with our logo on it. The hard work, the patience, the mistakes that I learned from, the friendships I made, and that I completed something special!\r\n\r\nSo far this year, students have learned how to frame, install drywall, install doors/windows, install trim base/case/crown, building weatherproofing, tile installation, and soon siding. We have so much more to teach them, they are learning at an exceptional speed if I am honest. \r\n\r\nI have been working on some big things for this year and for next as I push to build this program. Seeing students struggle with math hits home for me. When I was in school, math was an obstacle and not being shown how this would be practical in my life; I just tuned out. My instructor when I was learning applied math showed me this calculator and also why learning this math would elevate me past peers in the field. \r\n\r\nI only had 9 of these calculators when I was teaching the students how to find square footage or figuring out volume for a concrete order. The lesson took longer and I could see some students losing interest. Even with that being the case, I could see each students face light up knowing they just figured it out correctly.
