When they walked into the classroom they all made jokes about flying pigs and it was fun to hear them get excited about it. As we went through the lab, students were able to measure different variables, use their knowledge of forces and the centripetal force equation to solve for speed.\r\n\r\nWhat has been great about this lab, is that it was a combination of all the different material we learned this year. Using trigonometry, creating force diagrams and force equations, and solving for unknown variables.\r\n\r\nThis will lead into a bigger project of learning how to write lab reports. Because of your kindness, our students now have access to high-quality gardening tools and resources that have truly transformed their experience.\r\n\r\nThanks to you, we received grow lights, a watering can, pots, soil, soil probes, and many other helpful supplies. These materials have allowed us to bring gardening into our classroom and extend our growing season beyond the limitations of weather. The grow lights have been especially exciting. Students love checking on their seedlings each day, watching them thrive under the glow, and learning how light affects plant growth.\r\n\r\nThe soil probes have sparked some great discussions about moisture levels and root health, and the new pots and soil gave us a fresh start for planting herbs, vegetables, and even a few flowers. Watering plants with our new can has become a calming daily routine for many of our students, and it's wonderful to see them take ownership of caring for their plants.\r\n\r\nFor some of our students, this is their first experience growing something from seed. Their curiosity, pride, and teamwork have blossomed right alongside the plants. This new resource allowed students to explore more advanced, quantitative, and meaningful questions that would have been difficult or impossible to investigate accurately without access to precise absorbance data. Students were able to collect high-quality data, analyze it using Beer-Lambert Law, and draw scientifically valid conclusions—developing both their practical and analytical skills in the process.\r\n\r\nOne especially memorable project involved a student who used the spectrophotometer to determine the chlorophyll concentration in leaves collected from different parts of the school campus. This student explored how soil acidity affected photosynthetic pigment concentration, linking their findings to environmental and biological concepts. Another student used the spectrophotometer to quantify the iron content in spinach by forming an iron-phenanthroline complex and measuring its absorbance. Projects like these not only deepened students' understanding of chemistry but also boosted their confidence in using professional-grade scientific equipment.
