This means my students only had use of it for a few weeks before the end of the school year but they enjoyed it tremendously. \r\n\r\nOne student, in particular, who is being tested for dyslexia was seen sitting with a book and turning pages as the TonieBox read the story. This was especially heartwarming to see. \r\n\r\nAnother student used it daily during center time to have a private dance party using a music tonie and this proved helpful for positively directing that student's energy.\r\n\r\nOther students used the toniebox as a quiet spot to be alone when they didn't feel like playing with others. I love that kids could go to a place by themselves while continuing to learn while regulating their emotions. \r\n\r\nI look forward tonhaving a full school year with the toniebox in my classroom now that we are approved for connection.","fullyFundedDate":1719863639569,"projectUrl":"project/1st-year-teacher-seeks-to-inspire-imagin/8453003/","projectTitle":"1st Year Teacher Seeks to Inspire Imaginative PreReader Literacy w/Toniebox","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Virtue","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9568143_orig.jpg?crop=2875,2875,x360,y651&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1718232130401","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/virtue"},{"teacherId":9568143,"projectId":9092451,"letterContent":"I am a caucasian female. As an Instructional Assistant the past four years, I was in a small rural school of 310 total students where I knew every child's name in every grade and almost all the students were also caucasian. During black history month, we taught about Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, and others one might expect. \r\n\r\nThis year is my first year as a licensed teacher with a classroom on my own, in a school more than double in size where most of the students are african-american. Even my 3-5 year-old prek students already knew all about the figures taught during black history month at my former school...but, to be honest, I didn't know much about many others. This is the reason I sought black history books for my classroom. \r\n\r\nEach day during the month of February, I introduced 2-4 people who made an impactful difference for people of color. I did this through books generously donated. Often, the kids would ask questions I didn't know the answer to, so we would look up additional information about the person to learn more. Additionally, a job in my classroom is \"Librarian\" and the student with this job each day chooses one book for me to read during story time. In February, we read books not only about important figures in black history but also stories written by African-American authors. \r\n\r\nToward the end of the month, I asked the class who their most memorable or favorite figures were that we'd learned about. They wrote down what we owe to each person in history. We created \"shadows\" of them and displayed those outside our classroom for a family engagement event at the end of the month. \r\n\r\nThrough the gift of these books, I learned SO much about a plethora of people, many of whom I never heard of before. I can be a better teacher for my students -now and in the future, as I continue to learn more- because of these resources. My students can be enriched with black history knowledge that reaches far beyond the most well-known figures.","fullyFundedDate":1738804749004,"projectUrl":"project/more-black-history-in-lesser-told-storie/9092451/","projectTitle":"More Black History in Lesser-Told Stories","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Virtue","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9568143_orig.jpg?crop=2875,2875,x360,y651&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1718232130401","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/virtue"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_95903","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":780,"numTeachers":49,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":59,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":77.1,"schoolId":95903,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Hillpoint Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Hillpoint Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/suffolk-public-schools/hillpoint-elementary-school/95903"}
