This went way better than I ever imagined! Not only did somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of my 86 kiddos fully buy into this novel, the projects they have created in response to it have been incredible. I have received adapted book covers, impressionistic paintings, pages of character and theme-based poetry, and more than 10 literary analysis essays. \r\n\r\nI made them the agreement at the beginning of the quarter that I would read the novel to them every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and (as long as they at least looked like they were following along in their copy) there would be no interim busy work / reading checks until the end of the novel. If students in a class fell asleep or decided to work on other activities during the reading, we'd have a quick reading check the next reading day. At the conclusion of the novel, students had the opportunity to select from a list of 7 VA SOL standards to create a project/product, also of their choosing, to reflect their comprehension of the various elements involved in reading and analyzing literature at an 8th grade level. \r\n\r\nThere were a few hold-outs early on, but once we made it into the second week of reading, students I hadn't heard from all year were volunteering to help catch us up in the previous day's reading. Kids were anxious to get their hands on the novel and get back to reading. And on more than one occasion there were audible sighs of frustration when we'd have to stop reading for the day. \r\n\r\nWhile I am thrilled with the students' responses to the various standards, and I am proud of the work they are doing, I am undoubtedly the most excited to have given my students a reading experience of a full novel that they sincerely enjoyed. I could not have done this without your help, and I am unbelievably grateful for your faith in my vision and support for the children that are our future. Here's hoping we just tag-teamed them into a lifetime of loving literature for the sake of literature.","fullyFundedDate":1735605813679,"projectUrl":"project/a-chance-to-read-an-amazingly-positive-f/9019113/","projectTitle":"A Chance to Read an Amazingly Positive Fantasy Novel!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Oden","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9883062"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_54817","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1489,"numTeachers":78,"percentFrplEligible":44,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":21,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"19.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":64.6,"schoolId":54817,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lake Ridge Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lake Ridge Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/prince-william-county-public-schools/lake-ridge-middle-school/54817"}
