The moment they struck their first gong, the room filled with awe and curiosity as they listened to the rich vibrations fade into silence.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using the gongs in class to explore world music and sound effects in poetry. One of our favorite moments was when students added gong sounds to a poem they were performing, choosing when to play to match the mood of the words. It helped them think carefully about how sound can tell a story and create emotion. The gongs are also being used in ensembles, where students are learning how to listen, wait, and play together—important musical and life skills.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue using the gongs as part of a world music unit and in creative composition projects where they combine instruments, voices, and poetry. Because of your generosity, our music classroom now has beautiful ribbon streamers and a large parachute that are bringing joy, movement, and creativity to our lessons every day.\r\n\r\nThe very first time my students saw the new materials, their faces lit up with excitement. They could hardly wait to try them! We began with a movement activity where students used the ribbon streamers to show different musical elements—smooth vs. bouncy rhythms, fast vs. slow tempos, and high vs. low pitches. It was incredible to see how quickly they connected their movements with the music, and how confidently they expressed themselves in a way that went far beyond what we could do before. The parachute has been equally magical—students are working together to show musical form by raising and lowering the parachute during different sections of a piece. One favorite moment was when the whole class listened intently for the return of the \"A\" section in a song so they could all lift the parachute high together.\r\n\r\nYour gift has given my students a hands-on way to internalize music concepts while also practicing teamwork and creativity.
