Because of you, my students now have a safe, welcoming space in our classroom where they can pause, breathe, and reset when they are feeling overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nKindergarten is a big year filled with new routines, academic challenges, friendships, and emotions. For many of my students, this is their first school experience. Learning how to manage big feelings while also learning letters, sounds, numbers, and social skills can be a lot for five- and six-year-olds. Our Calm Corner has already made a meaningful difference in helping students build self-regulation and independence.\r\n\r\nWith the flexible seating, sensory tools, and calming resources you provided, students are learning healthy coping strategies such as deep breathing, counting, and identifying their emotions. Instead of shutting down or becoming frustrated, they are beginning to recognize when they need a break and confidently use the Calm Corner to reset and return to learning.\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond individual students. The entire classroom community benefits when children feel supported emotionally. We are building a classroom culture where feelings are acknowledged, coping skills are practiced, and every child feels safe and valued.\r\n\r\nYour kindness has given my students more than materials—you've given them tools for lifelong emotional growth. By providing a diverse selection of titles that span various backgrounds, reading levels, and personal interests, this project has removed the \"one-size-fits-all\" barrier to literacy. Instead of struggling with texts that feel out of reach or uninteresting, my students are now empowered to select books that genuinely resonate with them. This autonomy has been the key to fostering a genuine love of learning, as students are now eager to spend time in our library, exploring worlds that both mirror their own experiences and introduce them to new perspectives.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this enriched collection extends far beyond simple reading fluency; it has built a culture of curiosity and joy within the classroom. Seeing a student's face light up when they find a book that matches their specific passion or heritage is a testament to the importance of inclusive representation in education. These books serve as the foundational tools for building lifelong readers who view the library not just as a requirement, but as a treasure trove of discovery. We are incredibly thankful for the support that allowed us to build this collection, ensuring that every child, regardless of their starting point, has the opportunity to dive deep into a great book and develop a lasting passion for literacy.","fullyFundedDate":1770124913577,"projectUrl":"project/dive-into-a-good-book/10046601/","projectTitle":"Dive into a Good Book","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Asay","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10413873_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1768957552924","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10413873"},{"teacherId":10413873,"projectId":10057189,"letterContent":"The \"Teaching in Motion\" project has fundamentally shifted my classroom from worksheet-heavy instruction to a dynamic, hands-on environment. By using the whiteboard for tactile phonics and math practice, and the new headphones for immersive research and digital literacy, students are no longer passive observers. The impact on math comprehension has been especially profound; rather than simply memorizing rules for \"carrying the one,\" students now use base ten blocks to physically model regrouping. This tactile approach has turned previous points of frustration into breakthroughs of clarity, while the pattern blocks and realistic coins have given them the tools to master shape vocabulary and skip counting with confidence.\r\n\r\nBeyond student engagement, these materials have streamlined my ability to teach effectively. The individual containers for the manipulatives have significantly reduced the time spent on supply management, allowing me to focus my energy on high-impact small group instruction. We are deeply grateful to the Bezos Family Foundation for providing these foundational tools. They were immediately drawn to the bright colors of the pattern blocks and the \"real feel\" of the coins. Having the base ten blocks sorted into individual containers was a game-changer; the students felt a sense of ownership and pride having their own organized sets, which made our transition into math time instant and focused.\r\n\r\nWe use these resources daily to make abstract math concepts concrete. The coins have been instrumental in helping students master skip counting by 5s and 10s using nickels and dimes. However, the biggest \"lightbulb moment\" came while using the base ten blocks. We were tackling addition with regrouping—a notoriously difficult concept. One student, who had been struggling to understand what \"carrying the one\" meant on paper, physically traded ten \"ones\" cubes for a \"ten\" rod. You could see the realization wash over their face as they shouted, \"Oh! I'm just making a trade!\"\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are excited to take these skills to the next level. Now that they have mastered building numbers and adding them, our next step is to apply the base ten blocks to subtraction with borrowing. We will also be using the pattern blocks to begin exploring fractions and more complex geometry. We put these resources to use right away during our Force and Motion unit for a hands-on engineering challenge. The students were tasked with constructing a device that could move an object across a specific distance. They used the Hot Wheels cars to provide the driving force and engineered \"rafts\" out of the popsicle sticks and cardstock to drag objects behind them. The classroom was buzzing with excitement as they taped, tested, and modified their designs, turning abstract physics concepts into a fun, tangible reality.\r\n\r\nThanks to these supplies, my students now have a much deeper understanding of how pushes and pulls affect the movement of an object. Moving forward, we are taking this project to the next level by analyzing the data they collected during their builds to study friction. The students' next step is to test their Hot Wheels and raft contraptions on different textures—comparing smooth tile to rough carpet—to observe how surface resistance changes the force needed to move their creations. My students have already started using the new equipment to practice essential life skills—measuring, following directions, and working cooperatively in the kitchen. One of our favorite projects so far was making bread during our unit about \"working together.\" Each student took part in a different step—pouring, mixing, kneading, and baking—and the pride on their faces as they tasted their finished product was truly heartwarming. Students had mixed feelings about the taste, ranging from \"delicious\" to \"too hard.\" \r\n\r\nWhen the new materials first arrived, my students were thrilled! They were eager to explore each item, from the oven to the aprons, and couldn't wait to use them for our next recipe. For many of them, cooking is more than just a fun activity—it's an opportunity to build independence, confidence, and communication skills. These resources have made that possible in new and exciting ways.\r\n\r\nNext, we're preparing to use our new tools for our monthly school coffee cart! Students will take staff orders, prepare drinks, and handle money—all while practicing real-world skills like greeting others and working as a team.
