One of my classes that I teach is an enrichment course of forensic science. I am finishing my third year of teaching in public schools. Prior to coming to the school, I was a crime scene investigator for a local police department for approximately five and half years, a forensic scientist in the Virginia Department of Forensic Science firearms section for approximately six year, and helped teach the statewide forensic academy during this time. Forensic science is near and dear to my heart and I wanted to share my experiences and knowledge to help inspire younger generations to consider the field as a career choice when they are older.\r\n\r\nMy forensic science enrichment course allows students to explore career paths in the world of criminal justice and forensic science. During the school year I see four set of students (1 class per quarter). During this time, we learn to combine science, civics, writing, math, and art. We begin the quarter with a general overview of forensic science and the vast topics that are included in the field. \r\n\r\nDuring this time, we cover topics such as the following: crime scene documentation, photography, notes, sketches, measurements, laboratory capabilities, fingerprints, blood spatter, courtroom testimony, case law, and various other topics time permitted. I often bring in sworn law enforcement officials to supplement the course and provide their expertise on legal questions. \r\n\r\nYour contribution to my class was very appreciated. It allowed my students in my last quarter to have the fingerprint supplies to have hands on experience finding latent prints and lifting them from a variety of surfaces. In addition, the number markers allowed them to complete various mock crime scenes that allowed them to not only utilized their knowledge learned but allowed them to apply it in a real-world scenario. We all thank you for this opportunity that would not have been possible without your generous contribution. My students were so excited to all have the supplies for their fingerprinting projects and to be able to spend classes practicing fingerprints! Then at the end of the quarter their faces lit up by allowing them to practice mock crime scenes not only with fingerprints but using the crime scene markers to scope out evidence and label it! \r\n\r\nAgain, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for allowing my students this wonderful opportunity.","fullyFundedDate":1735168774866,"projectUrl":"project/mrs-garnetts-forensic-science-enrichme/8802728/","projectTitle":"Mrs. Garnett's Forensic Science Enrichment- Fingerprinting","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Garnett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9764285_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752352042124","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9764285"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55085","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":565,"numTeachers":50,"percentFrplEligible":45,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":5,"percentWhite":79,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"11.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":87.5,"schoolId":55085,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Peasley Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Peasley Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/gloucester-county-school-district/peasley-middle-school/55085"}
