It had a HUGE impact on our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders! We were able to create a huge breakout box activity for our students that will create a lifelong memory.\r\n\r\nThis project was in preparation for an author visit with Lindsay Currie on 9/18. Lindsay has a Delta Games series that involves escape rooms. Using the materials in this project, we were able to create different puzzles for each grade level. Puzzles included alphabetizing book titles; alphabetizing spine labels; and sorting book covers by fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Students also solved bookmark puzzles using Braille, pigpen ciphers, and cryptograms. They used teamwork and collaboration to solve puzzles and took pride in their success\r\n\r\nAfter each class solved their puzzles, they unlocked one of 11 locks on the giant trunk. Once all 11 locks were removed, we gathered all 200 students and opened the trunk to reveal a copy of the book for each student.\r\n\r\nThe project provided a variety of locks and cases that we were able to use in preparation of our author visit. This hands-on project with both educational and fun for our students. The instruments you helped purchase are already being utilized by students across grade levels.\r\n\r\nOne of the instruments was an otomatone, which is a small electronic instrument. The upper grades were excited to experiment with it as part of a lesson about the scientist who invented one of the first electronic instruments.\r\n\r\nThe guiros were also recently used as part of a first grade lesson, which wouldn't have been possible to do with a whole class without your donation. We created a sound story for the book Built to Last, which is about building friendships and working through conflict. It has been wonderful using our Scholastic News magazine across the grade levels. We have incorporated both the digital and print materials.\r\n\r\nFourth and fifth graders learned about avalanches and avy dogs who are trained to rescue humans. Third graders learned about the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Globetrotters. Students in all three grades especially enjoyed watching the online videos. Then they worked with partners to answer comprehension questions that reviewed nonfiction text features.\r\n\r\nOur Kindergarten and 1st grade students have been watching the videos, listening to the articles, and doing the follow-up activities. They learned about rain and voted about their like or dislike of the rain; they learned about wind and solved wind riddles; and they are learning about Spring and completing a hidden object search and find. \r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our students and helping to expand our resources to make learning more engaging and relevant. Some might wonder WHY would you need a Chompsaw in the Library of all places. Our Library is an activity hub where students are often creating after hearing stories. The first time we used the Chompsaw was when our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders heard MAYBE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, a story based on true events about a neighborhood collaborative art mural.\r\n\r\nI was able to take large donated pieces of cardboard and cut them easily into small work boards for our students. Then they met in small groups to create mini murals using recycled plastic lids. The Chompsaw made this so much easier and saved a great amount of time.
