Our students were so excited to receive new items instead of hand-me-downs from other classes. They were happy just to be able to choose the color of their worksite notebooks and worksite fanny packs.\r\n\r\n With their notebooks, they write down their tasks for the workday when they arrive at their jobsites. It's helped them practice their executive function; after finishing a task, they no longer ask me or their job coach what to do next, they check their task list and move onto the next item. Their fanny packs help them keep necessary work items within arms reach. One group keeps gloves in their packs to protect their hands from cleaning chemicals like window cleaner and disinfecting sprays. Another group holds the item scanner for the retail store they work at. If they need to find where an item is located, they can find it themselves with the scanner on them.\r\n\r\n When I showed them the liquid water color bottles, they were confused at first. When I put them in spray bottles and showed how it can create amazing spray paint designs for their school-based greeting card business, they became extremely giddy for this new option. Before we would put washi tape across blank cards and put a cut out window design over it for greeting cards. Now we have two different groups for greeting card creation.\r\n\r\n After five months, our students have learned to be independent in the workforce. They come to class knowing: they need to come to class early before the bell rings; change into their worksite polo uniforms; grab their worksite badges and fanny packs; and line up outside the class to show we're ready to catch the buses to our jobsites.\r\n\r\n At jobsites, they can independently go to the site's manager/owner, greet them, and ask what their tasks are for the day. They write it down and begin their work, mostly without teacher/job coach prompting.\r\n\r\n They are slowly but surely improving their executive function, independence, and social skills, which are necessary aspects of becoming fantastic members of the workforce.","fullyFundedDate":1761407855565,"projectUrl":"project/education-for-employment-creating-workf/9681611/","projectTitle":"Education for Employment: Creating Workforce Leaders","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Phannareth","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10241438_orig.jpg?crop=315,315,x0,y9&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757152190199","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10241438"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33834","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2809,"numTeachers":131,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":13,"percentBlack":12,"percentWhite":47,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.5,"schoolId":33834,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Springfield High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Springfield High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/fairfax-county-public-schools/west-springfield-high-school/33834"}
