As soon as my 6th graders saw the new prizes, their eyes lit up with excitement. Several students rushed over to inspect the colorful items—everything from squishy toys and mechanical pencils to slime to fidgets. One student exclaimed, \"Wait, we get to EARN these just for reading?\" Their enthusiasm was contagious!\r\n\r\nWe're using the prize drawer as a reward system to encourage independent reading and promote a love of books. Students earn prizes by reaching personal reading goals, such as completing a certain number of books, finishing a challenging chapter book, or reflecting on what they've read through writing or class discussion. During one recent activity, a reluctant reader proudly finished Freak the Mighty and chose a small fidget toy from the drawer. That same student is now halfway through their second novel—something that hadn't happened all year!\r\n\r\nThis project has turned reading into a classroom celebration. It has helped shift mindsets, especially for students who previously saw reading as a chore. The tangible rewards serve as motivation, but more importantly, they build confidence and momentum.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include launching a classroom-wide reading challenge tied to specific genres. As students explore historical fiction, fantasy, mystery, and biographies, they'll track their progress on a genre passport and earn prizes for completing each section. The goal is not only to read more—but to read broadly. Thanks to your generosity, our students feel seen, motivated, and supported. You've made a meaningful difference in our classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1737131147594,"projectUrl":"project/rewards-that-spark-reading-encouraging/9003201/","projectTitle":"Rewards That Spark Reading: Encouraging Lifelong Book Lovers!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wantz","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9234586_orig.png?crop=290,290,x0,y27&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1709080229504","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9234586"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33674","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":415,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":34,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":74,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"12.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":35.0,"schoolId":33674,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Johnson - Williams Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Johnson - Williams Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/clarke-county-public-schools/johnson-williams-middle-school/33674"}
