Students use the space for about 10 minutes at a time to reset, calm down, and return to class ready to learn. They are taking excellent care of the materials and exploring all of the options provided, with the coloring books and sand tray being particular favorites. This space has also given students a positive alternative if they cannot meet with a school counselor right away, allowing them to feel supported rather than waiting in frustration. Teachers have begun referring students to the Zen Den as well, which has helped prevent several students from being sent to In-School Suspension.\r\n\r\nWhen the Zen Den first opened, students were thrilled to have a calming, dedicated space just for them. Their faces lit up as they explored the materials, eager to try out every item in the area. Many expressed gratitude that the school had created a place where they could take a break when their emotions felt overwhelming. One student shared that the Zen Den helped them \"get back to class without feeling like I was in trouble.\" This excitement has turned into genuine care and responsibility; students are mindful of the space and respect it as a place of peace.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, the Zen Den will continue to support our school's trauma-informed practices while giving students more opportunities to self-regulate. As part of our next steps, we plan to integrate mindfulness activities and calming strategies into classroom lessons, so students can transfer these skills beyond the Den. We also hope to expand materials that are in high demand, such as coloring resources and sensory tools, to keep the space fresh and engaging. Thanks to this project, students have not only gained a safe place to calm down but also a valuable tool that strengthens our entire school culture.","fullyFundedDate":1745022741737,"projectUrl":"project/jaguar-zen-den-a-calm-space-for-big-fee/9246975/","projectTitle":"Jaguar Zen Den: A Calm Space for Big Feelings","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Welch","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9993986"},{"teacherId":9873517,"projectId":9005589,"letterContent":"Thank you for supporting our cause. One of our club members may make a huge difference in the planet's future. \r\n\r\nWhen we initially started the club we named it \"Climate Action Club,\" which didn't draw in our middle schoolers. After giving it some thought, we decided to narrow our message to \"Reduce One Use Plastic\" and offer students a place to come together, talk about why plastic is a problem, and what are some ways we can solve the problem. With donors like you, students receive a high quality aluminum water bottle that they decorate. This was a huge success!\r\n\r\nI plan to sponsor this club again this school year with a new partner, Ms. Abby Johnson. Our goal is to extend our activism into the community to promote the end of \"one use\" plastics with our students playing a vital role in the planet's sustainability.\r\n\r\nThank you, again, and I hope you will support us in the new 25/26 academic school year.","fullyFundedDate":1742582347409,"projectUrl":"project/eliminate-plastic-water-bottle-usage-to/9005589/","projectTitle":"Eliminate Plastic Water Bottle Usage to Help Protect Our Planet","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Glassow","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9873517"},{"teacherId":10066229,"projectId":9438089,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and support of my classroom. The resources you provided have made a noticeable difference in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for my students. One of the biggest changes has been the use of lamps instead of the bright overhead lights. My students love how the lamps make the room feel calm and inviting, and they've even begun using the space to work quietly or take breaks when they need to regulate their emotions. This has had such a big impact on their ability to focus and feel comfortable at school.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their excitement was contagious. They were thrilled to start the school year in a space that felt fresh, fun, and tailored to their needs. It was so heartwarming to see their faces light up as they explored the classroom and realized it was designed with them in mind. The environment has quickly become a place where they feel safe and eager to learn, which is exactly what I hoped for when creating this project.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, my students are beginning to dive more and more into their coursework, where collaboration and focus are key. Having a calming classroom space with flexible lighting and new materials allows them to fully engage in their work without feeling overwhelmed. We will continue building on this foundation throughout the school year, using the environment you helped create as a tool to foster growth, independence, and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1752687876072,"projectUrl":"project/bright-minds-need-bright-tools/9438089/","projectTitle":"Bright Minds Need Bright Tools","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Campbell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10066229_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1751392592366","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10066229"},{"teacherId":8320505,"projectId":9412099,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution. The club is made up of a diverse group of male and female students, multilingual students, and students of color. We are so proud to offer this program to anyone who is interested! In addition to the after school club, the robot kits are being used during school on Club Days and during math class. At JMS, we plan to use the robots as part of a Project Based Learning class too.\r\n\r\nEducators across the school division have recently met to plan a division-wide middle school robotics competition. Thanks to the generosity of donors and through collaboration between schools, every middle school now has robots in the building!
