In our public virtual school, these physical books are the center of a powerful learning experience that reaches students in every corner of Vermont.\r\n\r\nWhile our classroom is digital, the experience of holding these graphic novels is irreplaceable. My 7th- and 8th-graders engage with George Takei's memoir in ways that a standard textbook simply cannot. The interplay between text and imagery allows my students, including those with diverse learning needs, to witness the facial expressions of families in the camps, the harshness of the barbed wire, and the emotional weight of a child trying to understand why his country viewed him as an enemy.\r\n\r\nThis study is part of a larger unit where we analyze the photography of Dorothea Lange. My students practice historical detective work by comparing Lange's raw, honest photos of the incarceration with the government's attempt to sanitize the narrative. They examine how cropping an image can distort the truth, then return to the graphic novel to see how art can reclaim that truth.\r\n\r\nThe most moving part of this unit is our group discussions on civic responsibility. My students explored how fear and racist hysteria can erode justice, but they also focused on the future. They debated:\r\n\r\nHow can society work to repair wrongs?\r\n\r\nWhat is the duty of a citizen to their neighbor when rights are being threatened?\r\n\r\nHow do we ensure that \"Never Again\" is a practice, not just a slogan?\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide books. In a world where we often focus on what we are owed, your generosity has enabled my middle and high school students in Vermont to explore a deeper question: What do we owe each other and the earth?\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, my students move beyond traditional civics to create their own \"Bill of Responsibilities.\" Inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer's writing, we discuss how a society built only on rights is incomplete without a foundation of reciprocity.\r\n\r\nUsing the books you provided, students draft ten personal responsibilities as their final assessment. They don't just think about rules; they think about kinship and relationships. By shifting the focus from getting to giving, students develop a level of civic maturity essential to a healthy democracy. \r\n\r\nWe also use these books as a bridge to our local landscape. My students research the Abenaki Nation's concept of kinship with land and water, seeking parallels to the Potawatomi teachings in the text. This turns a standard reading assignment into a \"place-based\" investigation. Others are very excited to have theirs arrive in the mail. These novels will allow them to read new stories in comfortable locations. Hopefully this will allow them to find a joy in reading.\r\n\r\nOne book that everyone received was Fish in a Tree that teaches it is ok to be different. All students also received a historical fiction book to read this year. We are excited about our picture book library that is now full of books that will increase our understanding of this year's science and social studies topics like ecosystems and westward expansion.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards were used this morning during our class for everyone to share their learning.\r\n\r\nThank you so very much for your generosity in helping the start of our school year be the best it can be.
